In today's podcast, we get CNET News writer Tom Krazit in the studio to talk about yesterday's news that AT&T will finally allow voice over Internet protocol (VoIP) applications to run on its network. This opens up the field for apps from Vonage and Skype to actually compete with AT&T's business, and possibly bring Google's Voice service to Apple's iPhone.

I think the next issue for ATT after the GV and VoIP is consumers will want to drop their voice plan and only have a data plan. If I am not mistaken you must have both a data plan and a voice plan for the iPhone. Of course ATT will only raise the price of data plans. But over time these prices for data plans should fall.

Consumers should just keep the pressure on Telcos and one day we may see wireless networks act exactly the same as wired networks. This is a small victory for consumers.

Google Voice is very nifty, but it isn't really VoIP. Just merging multiple #s into one.

Finally something good to hear from AT&T.
Can't wait to see the quality of skype over the 3g.
Way to go AT AND T! Now I may not join Verizon once my contract is over with AT&T- yes, depending on the quality of service.
