Will Firefox 3 set a new world record?

by Robert Vamosi

Mozilla hopes to set a world record for the most downloads within a 24-hour period on the day Firefox 3 is released (currently expected to be in June).

The online edition of Guinness Book of World Records does not list a current record for most downloads within 24 hours.

The final release candidates for Firefox 3 are showing a number of improvements, including greater rendering speed, the use of fewer resources, and more baked-in security features than other browsers.

To help Mozilla set a world record, the foundation recommends the following:

To get people excited, Mozilla has provided a map showing pledges to date along with more details.

As CNET's resident security expert, Robert Vamosi has been interviewed on the BBC, CNN, MSNBC, and other outlets to share his knowledge about the latest online threats and to offer advice on personal and corporate security. How pathetic! Who would become a "campus representative" for for a web browser? How shallow is that? With people starving in Mynamar and Darfur, millions of homeless in China, and an upcoming election in the US, where the outcome could mean an historic change, are there really people who think that selling a web browser the best way to invest their time?

Okay... so where is the actual "selling" in a web browser that costs $0.00? Also, I think we can safely refuse to give up anything fun and/or cool just to satisfy your demand for some sort of pure somber moratorium...

Bah! The most downloads in 24-hours is probably the google icon or some microsoft patch or some youtube or youpron video.

Same here... been using it for nearly a month now, and so far, no problems at all. I'm also loving the new features (esp. when it comes to shifting tabs around, the ScrapBook feature, and numerous others). I'm mostly loving the faster response times and a lag time that's way lower than IE 7 can ever hope to be.

I like FF3, but I don't like that the Google Toolbar isn't ready for it yet. Otherwise it's bloody fabulous!

Did the fix the pre-cache memory leak problem FF2 has ??? They are in denial over this...much as Apple has denied problems in the past. I dont trust a company that is in denial.

I guess I'm kinda looking forward to it. But based on the few times I have tried it on a friends laptop, I'm not that impressed with the UI on Vista or XP. The Mac version of Firefox 3 on OS X especially Leopards looks superb. I will eventually upgrade to it, but not until everyone else have given it a good try out. I'm not in a hurry to download a barrage of point updates. Ff 2.0.14 is doing just fine right now.

What a great time to share that unloved trojan, or whatever? All these people so caught up in hype to really check what they're getting! And you can make it multi-platform too!

You are begging for some hacker to set up a link to a spoofed page and set a record for the most downloaded virus in one day...

After 5 years, Firefox faces new challenges

Mozilla helped reshape the Web since releasing Firefox 1.0 five years ago. Now it's got a reawakened Microsoft and Google Chrome to reckon with.

There's a map for that: GPS or smartphone?

Almost every handset comes with mapping software these days, but standalone GPS devices are becoming more affordable than ever.
