Netflix down for at least five hours

by Greg Sandoval

Updated at 4:00 p.m. PDT: We have posted a completely new story here that details how Netflix will be forced to delay deliveries.

Internet movie rental company Netflix suffered a site outage beginning at 7 a.m. PDT Monday, and the company doesn't know when it will have the problem fixed, a Netflix spokesman said.

Customer service personnel told CNET News.com that they were told the site was undergoing routine maintenance when something went wrong, information they then passed on to customers. That is incorrect, according to Steve Swasey, the company's director of corporate communications. He said he couldn't discuss the causes but that it had nothing to do with site maintenance.

"Our engineers have been feverishly working on repairing the problem all morning," Swasey said. "It was an unanticipated, unplanned outage and we apologize to our customers."

Site outages are typically no big deal as any company can suffer one. But a blackout that lasts for more than an hour is rare, and one spanning several hours is rarer still.

Netflix, which has 7 million subscribers, continued to ship DVDs after the outage began, though its unclear whether the problem will eventually affect the company's entire database, Swasey said. This means it's possible that users might see some delays in receiving movies. He added that customers needn't worry about their stored movie picks. None of their information will be lost.

This is one of the few setbacks suffered by Netflix in the past year. Since October, the company's shares have doubled in price. In midday trading, Netflix was trading at about $38. The company's site also went down for an extended period last July. The cause was never disclosed.

Better than iTunes
by hunter_jc March 24, 2008 12:51 PM PDT
I can't purchase anything on iTunes for days now because of stupid 5002 error. No clue when they are going to be fixed.

Glad I reordered the movies in my queue last night before the outage hit so maybe I'll get the ones
I wanted first instead of the others that I moved
down on the list.

Bad Customer Service
by Benf March 24, 2008 11:03 PM PDT
Strange you should say that Netflixes Customer Service is "bad", I have been with Netflix since early 1997 and have had some of the best customer service I have ever had, including 2 recent customer service requests (Both in February), I cant imagine them being any better.

I like how nobody wants to say Netflix was hacked.

How would you know
by Dead Soulman March 24, 2008 4:38 PM PDT
How would you know if they got hacked? I'd be a bit embarrassing for a company to just come out and say it, but we just don't know. So you have 50% chance of being right. But, it could've been a simple mistake by one of their IT team that led to what seems like a disaster for a company that depends on its website to conduct its business. I don't have any issues with Netflix, so I hope the site comes back soon, or that my movies shipped out and I'd be getting them tomorrow.
That or...
by zaznet March 25, 2008 8:00 AM PDT
It could have been a hack, or even just an attempt to compromise the security of their systems. It is very likely a security concern even if there was no direct hack attempt made.

The discover of any security vulnerability that could be exploited would warrant such an immediate outage with little information as to the cause.

It is possible and likely that we'll never find out for sure. :)
Good. Serves 'em right for their obnoxious pop-under ads.

Sure you don't have spyware??
by rage-demon March 24, 2008 6:15 PM PDT
Do you mean you're getting pop-up/pop-under ads on the Netflix site itself? Or are you seeing other sites that have ads for Netflix?

If it's the former, then you must have a spyware or adware issue as I've yet to have any problems with pop-up/under ads while browsing for DVDs, organizing my queue, or watching movies directly on the Netflix site.

If it's the latter, then you should be cursing the other sites as it was their sleezy choice to make the ad open in a new window. That, and you may still have a spyware/adware issue.

Peerflix, Shutting Down, Bankruptcy around the corner
by edizz March 24, 2008 10:18 PM PDT
Received this email from Peerflix at 8pm PST:
Dear Peerflix Member,

Effective April 23, 2008 Peerflix is discontinuing the Marketplace and DVD buy/sell/trade portions of Peerflix.com. While the Peerflix.com web site will be available beyond April 23, 2008, you will no longer be able to buy, sell, send or receive DVDs on Peerflix as of that date. While we have made considerable investments in our marketplace platform over the past four years, unfortunately the escalating costs of operating the marketplace do not make that business viable at this juncture. As we move out of the DVD marketplace business, we are focusing our energy and resources on building the Peerflix Media Network which is now the web's fastest growing vertical movie network....
The Peersafe Protection Program will also be terminating effective April 23, 2008 meaning that you will no longer be able to make any Peersafe claims starting April 23, 2008.

What CNet Knows...
by zaznet March 25, 2008 7:56 AM PDT
They know the site went down and they are reporting on that. They didn't make assumptions as how it should be fixed or what caused it. They didn't say some other rental service was better or even mention competitors.
OH MY GOSH!!
by Harrison912 March 25, 2008 9:20 PM PDT
I know it's upsetting when things don't go as planned but NetFix being down for 8 hours should not throw folks into a tailspin. It's entertainment we're talking about not a life support system that went down. There are other things to do for entertainment that could be explored during that time frame. It's an interesting commentary on our society here in the USA when we get upset because our movies are delayed. What will we do when a real crisis hits?
