Yahoo Messenger gets slicker
The new Yahoo Messenger toolbar lets you send an instant message, text message or call a contact with one click.
(Credit: Yahoo)Yahoo is launching a new version of its popular Yahoo Messenger on Tuesday that lets you forward phone calls and instant messages and watch videos and view photos with friends, among other enhancements. But probably the most popular thing will be the new emoticons.
Yahoo Messenger 9.0 has a redesigned interface with new "skin" background designs and new emoticons for expressions like "thumbs up," "thumbs down," and "rock on," (yes, the little yellow face ball is holding up its second and fourth fingers in the rock-star pose).
Beyond the surface, some of the changes are even more impressive. For instance, it's easier to call, text or IM contacts by simply hovering over the contact name and clicking. You can also click an arrow to the left of the contact and see a larger version of their avatar, contact them, start an e-mail session, and edit their information. And you can send a text message to someone's phone using your computer keyboard. These communications features were here before but were just not as apparent or easy as they are now.
You can also forward offline IMs to a mobile device and forward incoming phone calls to a phone number.
Sharing online map links doesn't open a new browser window, but displays the map in the IM window, allowing you to zoom and scroll around.
You can also send videos from YouTube, Yahoo Video and other sources, and you and your contact can watch the synchronized video via a sharing window, pausing to chat or replay.
The same thing with photos from Flickr or your desktop. You and your contact can view them together via a sharing window.
And file transfers between contacts can be up to two gigabytes in size, double the previous size limit. If you have Norton antivirus on your desktop, the files can be scanned for viruses as well.
Some changes will be instantly noticeable. For instance, the contacts have two lines now, with the status message on its own line. But you can condense that back to one line if you like. You can also insert emoticons within the status messages--like I could say I'm "in a meeting" and have the "sleepy" emoticon next to it with the "zzzzs" trailing up.
Yahoo is expanding the service to more countries and languages, too. People in Thailand and Indonesia now can instant message in their native language, and in India they have nine new languages to choose from. The service has been localized in six new markets, bringing the total to 25 markets reached.
Now, how do you say "Rock on!" in Hindi?
Update Oct 30: Yahoo has explained what it meant by "unlimited file transfer,"--while people will be able to send as many files as they want, the size of files they will be able to send at one time is limited to two gigabytes.

- Lets not leave out that never buy vista Gates still has his hands in just bout all. I bought the complete garbage from best buys I know wrong move till you learn.I then installed IE7 it was as bad as MS ooh ya new lol vista is a mess do not get it no matter what bb or circuit city says You can buy a brand new system at a much lower cost then I almost ate pls head to any dell or hp or your choice tell them per high grade master comp science that you want the basic only without vista the tech said which gee has yahoo now been bought out by India sad we have very educated ones here out of work am getting sick to death because whatever country except CAN we have to speak the other lang.Sorry I now on a rented system my god with the $$ Im wasting and even its a mess all in the name Im a home user sorry when your stuck with cancer, live with parents sorry didnt want to come here only did cuz on top of doing an excellent job as a tech surport cust/care person Im also a nurse.I dont need to give you my resume only to say stick with the old xp2 and thats it till more patches are put on or whatever they decide to do.Less is better and have to lol cuz you pay for antispy ware and my cant use it on a rented sys sorry dont feel like tech it either its why i pay far to much to rent one anyone want to make money to get me to a place to buy a new system:)reading so much that I have told others then when the big bucks steps in it wins.My so called friends freakd when 360 went to mash oh well they now are off using other sites I showed them all yahoo is now ATThoo and forget it unless you want 38techs in your family home most all on drugs or comcast I finally went back till Im going to have to try my last one sprint yet I know as all are on that DSL bandwagon never use verizon for a home user or sorry you will be at 28kpps.LOL:)this is about all I could stomach readin ooh a new toy or wht ever and sorry for using this to educate whoever its hard enough to type now days as much as trying to find a taxi owned here in richy rich no Cali,by the afganys. (8 Comments)take care all and maybe cnet can let some of this go to wherever right area should be right now this took all the strenght i had to leave.Far to many still stuck on all that graphics and garbage plus read its also beta becareful cus then you'll be upset as i am at this point sad thing is it only takes a few to get heard only far to many sheep and not a leader in all this new and not imporved ? dont worry I wont be bac ok its only to help not let any of you go thru what i have on top of 2 disz or maybe 3 terminal and hard when your alone.
