Buy AT&T/Yahoo DSL and get... e-mail ads!

Customers paying for AT&T and Yahoo's co-branded DSL service are outraged about ads that started showing up over the last few weeks that take up quite a bit of real estate on the page. A chunky "skyscraper" ad now runs up and down the right side of the page. There have always been ads on Yahoo's free Web-based e-mail service, but paying customers say the monthly fees they pay should be enough to spare them the advertising.

"AT&T Yahoo has inserted advertising into every corner and crevice of the AT&T Yahoo 7 Browser interface for email," one CNET News.com reader wrote in an e-mail. "Users of AT&T Yahoo are outraged. The company said that they needed to provide this 'feature' to give us 'unlimited storage space.' Most of us didn't want 'unlimited storage space.'"

"I'm perfectly fine with ads, but not of this enormous size. I'm completely appalled," wrote one customer in a forum on the Broadband Reports site.

"I will gladly pay more for no advertising...so why don't you charge me more and for those unwilling to pay more... you can SPAM them!!!" another wrote. "I am so angry I think steam must be coming out of my ears."

The situation prompted Nate Anderson of tech news site Ars Technica to post a humorous "letter" to Yahoo this week:

"So I get a graphical ad on the right side of the screen. Not cool, but ok, whatever. But it didn't stop there. Small text ads have appeared just above my 'Inbox' and three more are positioned just below my list of custom folders. They look 'cluttery,' like the knickknack shelf above my grandma's fireplace with its collection of wooden owls. Also, you've tacked an ad to the 'sent mail' confirmation screen. Thanks! Diving into this with both feet, I see."

Someone has even posed a question on Yahoo Answers asking how to get rid of the ads:

"When Yahoo/AT&T/SBC switched to adding ads in the browser page of my email, at first I was 'eh...it's not so bad' but now, its causing issues with my computer. Or at least it seems that way. Email takes along time to load, it stutters as it loads. Just annoying. Any suggestions other than use a different mail browser?"

Sadly, as of three days later there was not one answer.

Yahoo's answer to me, via a spokesman, was that they have received "minimal feedback" about the ads and that it was a "business decision by both companies to do this."

Then the canned e-mail Yahoo statement arrived: "This will serve as a new source of revenue to help maintain our commitment of delivering a leading broadband experience complete with industry leading features at a competitive price. As we remain committed to providing users with the best possible online experience, the new advertisements will be carefully integrated and aimed at being useful to consumers."

Hmmmm. "Carefully integrated" and "useful?" Try again.

Maybe Yahoo should take a cue from Microsoft. The software giant provoked a similar response early on when it tested skyscraper ads, but decided to drop the ads and forgo the revenue.

Update 10:00 a.m. June 22: I received e-mails and reader feedback noting that although Yahoo claims not to have received a lot of customer complaints about this matter there are pages and pages and pages on Yahoo's own Yodel Anecdotal blog of angry barbs written by customers furious about the ads. Too many comments to count. I'd say that's not so "minimal."

Yahoo email is run by idiots - more bad changes today
by SandraDallas June 21, 2007 4:26 PM PDT
Today, in addition to losing all that screen space to annoying ads, I found that the "delete" button is now where the "reply" button used to be! I use Yahoo Mail Beta, don't know if it has happened on the regular version. And the reply button is now located, you guessed it! right next to the delete button. How incredibly stupid to put those buttons right next to each other.

On another note, someone "chat" got turned on or maybe its a new feature and every time I open my inbox it tries to connect. While its trying to do so it slows the loading of my inbox. I did a search in the help section for "disable chat" and came up with nothing.

In all my years of using software and the internet I have never been so disgusted. The day the ads showed up I called technical assitance and was the 72nd caller! And they claim they haven't had very many complaints!

Maybe use AdBlock on Firefox?

Short of a user backlash forcing Yahoo to get rid of the ads, I wonder if using the AdBlock add-on in Firefox can help get rid of them?

Another way around the ads
by christopherdorrell June 21, 2007 6:29 PM PDT
If you use a mail program such as Mail for the Mac, the ads are gone. I will just wait until they remove the ads and use the web based mail only when necessary. That will make it a little less painful.

Yahoo and ATT's claim that they have had "minimal complaints" is pure B.S. Add your complaint to Yahoo on their own blog at:

Yahoo and ATT are being flooded with complaints for the past weeks. Yahoo has even tried band-aid fixes to the further ire of paying subscribers.

Tried to complain - they wouldn't let me
by gary_wagner June 29, 2007 11:20 AM PDT
Maybe the reason they haven't gotten a lot of complaints is because the tool they make you use for providing feedback doesn't work. I tried four times to send them a message asking them to get rid of that annoying ad or I would find another email service. It wouldn't work any of those four times.

Look like google wins again. I'm going to start using my gmail account from now on since Yahoo refuses to listen to its user base.

AT&T overwhelming advertising on email page
by cpmuller April 3, 2008 4:08 AM PDT
4/3/08: AT&T's email account customers continue to endure unwanted advertising embedded into, what they expect to be, their personal email page. The paid-for service now includes large embedded advertising icons within the customer's actual email list of messages, not just outside that particular box. I believe most email subscribers perceive this to be a gross intrusion into their 'personal' space. When will AT&T return to putting the customer FIRST - above all else???

I have att/yahoo dsl. their browser (ATT/YAHOO) doesnt allow me to add bookmarks. I talked to the tech who transferred me to another tech who said he couldnt trouble shoot ATT/YAHOO IE BROWSER because his computer was using FIREFOX! Good Grief. lol. I asked him if that's the case how can you trouble shoot me? He said he didnt know.. (okay ) So I have to go to regular ie and add bookmarks instead of usking their ATT/YAHOO browser? Good grief. GUYS DO NOT GO WITH ATT DSL..RUN RUN RUN. I ve no choice. but instead of logging on to their own ATT/YAHOO interface ill have to start using the vanilla IE. I dont want to do this because I want to use their version. Its simple, but alas its not working. . I'll live with this..but if they cant even trouble shoot their own ATT/YAHOO IE Browser there is a problem.

Do NOT subscribe to AT&Ts DSL service. I don't care about the ads becaus I use my own email, but their customer support is unbelievably bad. They lose install orders and their billing is awful.

I have the DSL in my San Diego vacation home. It was disconnected because I missed a bill, sorry, but I paid a reinstatement fee and they did not turn my DSL back on because I did not call them and SAY I wanted my DSL on again. My phone continued to work, but the DSL was off when I arrived for my vacation.

Never did they contact me to say it was going off. Why? Because they are only allowed to call the house that has the DSL service. They have NO way of recording a different contact number. I don't live in that house, its my vacation home.

Upon finding out it was off, I called AT&T. I spent two hours talking to India, being put on hold repeatedly (without asking) anytime I asked a question a different department might handle. Three departments: billing, collections and service IN INDIA do not share information. Once it was onbvious they couldn't help me (2 hours) they connected me to a U.S. center (collections).

Upon hearing my complaints of no notification and using my vacation info as their contact they said "That's the way AT&T works, sir," - no help, no apology, no nothing except the run around.

I had to submit a new order for new service (they said) which was five days out. I knew they could throw a switch - I know DSL. I have all the equipment already installed. NO! THAT'S IMPOSSIBLE, AT&T DOESN'T WORK THAT WAY"

Five days later my DSL did NOT come on. I called INDIA again. After an hour they realized I had a valid install scheduled for that day, but it had been lost. So guess what, they "flipped the switch" and turned it on.

ASH POLES!
