ZoneAlarm announces its Vista-compatible firewall

Checkpoint has released an updated ZoneAlarm 7.1 that's designed to work with Windows Vista's architecture. This is the first true two-way firewall for the Windows Vista environment. Windows Vista includes the Windows Firewall, however, it blocks only inbound traffic, allowing all "except where excepted" outbound traffic. This may seem like a fine distinction, but it can be huge. If you acquire a remote-access Trojan on your Windows Vista machine, Microsoft may not flag the outbound traffic.

Checkpoint explained its delay in releasing this product in an e-mail. "Rather than rush to market with a patchwork solution when only a small fraction of our users were actually using Vista," the company said, "we decided to invest in the long-term." This includes building the product on Microsoft's Windows Filtering Platform API, rather than continuing to use the soon-to-be outdated TDI API. Not only does this provide ZoneAlarm with more stability under Windows Vista, but it means Checkpoint won't have to rewrite its code when TDI does expire.

ZoneAlarm continues to provide a free version in addition to its paid versions. Its Internet security suite continues to use best-of-breed third-party products such as the Kaspersky antivirus engine and MailFrontier antispam filters.

O rly?
by Searinox Navras June 13, 2007 11:39 AM PDT
So far their official site contains absolutely no information whatsoever confirming this. With this news having propagated to PcMag and CNET I'm guessing that whatever info they made public - through whatever form of communication they did it - they forgot to post it on THEIR OWN SITE...

Did you guys jump the gun on this? If you're going to announce a new version, at least make it available for download.

Slowed me down
by rick0716 June 20, 2007 6:54 AM PDT
I used to use ZoneAlarm with XP and really liked it. The new Vista version has slowed my computing to the point where I'm going have to remove it and wait for an improved upgrade. Much too slow.

Neither Zone Alarm nor Comodo.........
by porciniman June 27, 2007 1:09 PM PDT
have a working "FREE" firewall, this date......6/27/07!!!!!!

As a matter of observation and trying to use "XP SP2" components with "VISTA"...I have had bad luck!!!!

It seems, Bill and his cohorts, have made sure their "XP" components are "NOT" backward compatable!!!!?????

***???!!!

They semm to have created a new market for themselves!!

It would seem we have to upgrade (BUY NEW SUFF...TRANSLATION MORE $$$$$$$$$$$$$ for us to spend)to feed their coffers to run "VISTA" properly!!!!!!

I can't use Comodo or Zone Alarm, along with 2 SATA RAPTOR drives, that came from an "XP SP2" system w/VISTA!!!!!

All the more money for "BILL", I would surmise!!!!!!

This f******g SUCKS!!!!

Create a new OS and you have to buy all new peripherals!

Great maketing statergy for them...sucks for US!!!!!

Do not try to install this dog of software, it will grab your system and not let go!!!! I tried 3 times to install this software after 3 downloads after 2 1/2 hrs. I just reset my machine 3 times. My System is a p-4 ,2 gb Ram, Intel motherboard. It was the latest vers. This software is a joke it should not have gone out the door. It has ruined the reputation of Zonelabs. It should go back to Gibson Research ! I have used and trusted this software for years it was great, not anymore, I have never had this much trouble installing software in 17 years. Good luck if you try to install it.

It tried to install something like(KB929547-v2-x86.msu) for an hour then came back with Install error like: Installer encounter an error: 0x80004005 unspecified error. It also had Validation Failed for vsmon.exe and for vsinit.dll

I reset my machine and did restore 3 time before my machine would start working at normal speed again. Software engineers at Zonelabs should be fired of letting this junk out the door!!!
