Of the 62 million PCs shipped in the first quarter of 2007, the biggest story is a company that shipped a little over 4 million units. Taiwan-based Acer has taken hold of 6.8 percent of the global PC market, good enough for third place, according to market research firm iSuppli.

After taking the No. 3 slot in worldwide notebook sales from Toshiba in the fourth quarter of 2006, Acer has taken even more ground, this time from Lenovo. The Chinese computer maker is now 0.4 percent points behind Acer in worldwide computer market share.

Acer also turned in the best growth performance of all the top five PC suppliers, according to the iSuppli report. Its shipments grew 45.8 percent to 4.2 million units, up from 2.9 million in the same quarter a year ago.

Hewlett-Packard continued its dominance in the market, maintaining its lead with 17.2 percent market share, followed by Dell at 14.4 percent. Dell was the only one of the top five with negative growth, down almost 7 percent since the first quarter of 2006.

Copy of the market share report?
by dmehus June 5, 2007 10:48 AM PDT
Could you post a copy of the current worldwide PC maker and worldwide notebook maker market share report - or provide a link to it? I hate it when market researchers like iSuppli are not hesitant to share their analysis with the media but rarely disclose their reports to the public. I'd like to know the Top 10 PC Makers by market share and the top 5 (or top 10) notebook makers.

Cheers,
Doug

Acer Screwed Me
by BattleAce7101 June 5, 2007 11:38 AM PDT
I bought 3 laptop computers.
Two computers got a black bar in the right side of the monitor.
They fixed my daughter's computer and refused to fix my son's computer due to liquid in keyboard.

1) The problem was with the monitor not the keyboard!!!
2) Both computers had the exact problem which proved that their monitors were faulty
3) There is no way my son had liquid in his keyboard. I could understand my daughter's computer since she is careless around her computer but they fixed her computer and refused to fix his! Never buy an ACER laptop because their warranty service is horrible!!!

They fixed your daugther's machine, so you have no complaint there.

There was liquid in your son's keyboard and liquid doesn't spontaneously occur in keyboards, so warranty repair did not apply. They were correct and well within their rights as there is no way to know if the screen problem was caused by an electrical issue due to the liquid in the key board.

That both computers had display issues does not prove that "the displays were faulty". All it proves is that...both computers had display problems. Proof requires cause and effect, or at least prior knowledge of a factory defect.

The bottom line here is that you are pissed off because you didn't get what you wanted. The warranty is the warranty and it is no different than that offered by any other laptop manufacturer.

If you want to avoid this sort of thing in the future, fork out for the vendor's extended warranty program. They're worth the extra money.

As for you anger, well...
Still Junk

Acer has always been synonymous with "cheap" piece of junk. The acquisition of Gateway did NOTHING to change that image. Who cares if one cheap piece of junk manufacturer buys another cheap piece of junk manufacturer. lol.
