Yahoo is close to acquiring sports-fan Web site Rivals.com for as much as $100 million, according to blog site paidContent.org, which cites unnamed sources.

"The new acquisition would be a boost to Yahoo Sports, which has been looking for ways to catch up to the juggernaut of ESPN.com and the surge from FoxSports.com," the post says. "It has an already-existing deal with Rivals.com for sharing sports content; Rivals also supplies content to USAToday.com, AOL Sports, SportingNews.com, MSNBC.com and SI.com."

Rivals.com acquired the assets of online sports network Rival Networks when it liquidated in 2001. At the time, Yahoo was looking at buying the assets, the report says.

A spokeswoman for Yahoo said the company "is always in talks with a number of companies, but we don't discuss them publicly."
