Lumen Software makes way for 'LAPP' stack
Lumen Software is expected to release a toolkit on Wednesday for building hosted applications using the "LAPP" stack, consisting of Linux, the Apache Web server, PostgreSQL database and the PHP scripting language.
The company created the framework called Lumenation while building portal applications and decided to release it to developers looking for alternatives to Java, said CEO Tad Gordon.
Lumen will offer some template applications for free and charge for more advanced modules. The company also expects to make money on installation and support services, Gordon said.
Gordon said that the company also hopes to host third-party applications which can be shared among developers, much like Salesforce.com's AppExchange.
The development framework is being used by 200 customers already, he said.
