A year after joining Open-Xchange, Dan Kusnetzky has left his job as executive vice president of marketing strategy of the company, a Microsoft Exchange competitor that sells open-source software for managing e-mail, calendars and contacts.

Kusnetzky said Open-Xchange was "headed in a different direction" and his employment contract wasn't renewed. He's now co-founding a small company, he said.

Separately, Open-Xchange announced a partnership this week under which Web site hosting company 1&1 Internet will offer its customers use of Open-Xchange's software, initially in Germany and later in the United States, United Kingdom and France.
