News flash: Spears' shaved locks go for top dollar
As international superstar Britney Spears made still more headlines for reportedly checking into rehab Tuesday, her newly shorn hair continued to draw plenty of attention on its own, commanding $1 million for bidders willing to pay up big.
In a stunt that many view as another sign of the star's decline, the dancing diva shaved off her own hair Friday night at Esther's Haircutting Studio in Tarzana, Calif. Over the weekend, the salon owners put her hair up for bid on eBay, according to People magazine, but it was later pulled from the site for an undisclosed reason. Brit copycats have already put up their own tresses for auction on eBay, and one member who claims to have one piece of Spears' hair is selling it for $97.50. As of Tuesday afternoon, the former had a bid of 99 cents, while the latter had no bids.
An independent site reportedly set up by the salon, BuyBritneysHair.com, claims to be "an authentic listing" and "not a scam" set up for those serious about buying the "oops I did it again" singer's mane. The site is also claiming to sell the Red Bull can Spears allegedly drank from while performing the shaving act, a Bic lighter and Omega clipper used by Spears, and the "valuable" BuyBritneysHair.com domain.
A portion of the proceeds will go to charity, according to the site.
