Will The New York Times stop printing?

by

Is the publisher of The New York Times getting ready to close up shop?

Grey Lady to be online-only?

OK, maybe not quite yet. But in a recent interview, publisher Arthur Sulzberger said the future of the Grey Lady may be more digital than physical.

"I really don't know whether we'll be printing the Times in five years, and you know what? I don't care either," Sulzberger told Haaretz, adding that he sees his job on managing the transition from print to Internet.

No word yet on how you'll do the crossword puzzle in the bathroom with the new online version.

Blog community response:

"The other missing piece is to provide subway and other travelers a means to read that content without firing up a laptop. ePaper technology like that used in the Sony Reader will need to become more available, affordable, and feature-rich to help make the transition comfortable for most people. Kudos to the New York Times for not fearing the future. It will be an exciting ride, and as Mr. Sulzberger points out, we don't know when it will end."

"Net? I'm pretty optimistic about the role of journalism, in print and online. Good to see Art agrees with me. ;)"

"I hope that he's able to pull it off, though his record to date does not inspire confidence."
