IBM opens up alphaWorks with hosted service
IBM, marking the tenth year of its alphaWorks Web site, on Tuesday launched a service designed to invite more people to use technology from IBM's labs.
alphaWorks Services allows people to trial various technologies from an IBM-hosted site.
For example, IBM has developed Deep Thunder, a system to forecast the impact of weather changes on businesses. Rather than download and install software, a person can try out the application, which came out of IBM Research.
Since launching, alphaWorks has become on IBM's most effective methods for telling the world, including software developers, about technologies under development.
Rather than keep its research under wraps, IBM will continue to publicize it research efforts even before they are put into products, a spokesperson said last week.
