Is YouTube commercial about Zune?

by Mike Yamamoto

Gizmodo is one of many blogs that are abuzz over what seems to be an authentic Microsoft commercial posted on YouTube. Although no specific product is mentioned, speculation has predictably centered on the much-hyped Zune.

Microsoft

Some have theorized that Microsoft itself was responsible for the unofficial airing on YouTube, in an effort to get some viral publicity on a medium popular with youthful consumers. But if that's true, the underground campaign could already have some unintended consequences.

Rather than praising or otherwise discussing the ad, some bloggers have responded by resurrecting a popular parody that was seen widely on YouTube a few months ago that illustrated how Microsoft would have marketed the iPod.

Blog community response:

"It could also be talking about Windows Vista, the new Windows OS, which is also targeted to launch this year. But the hints of entertainment in a small device seems to be more talking about Zune."

"Microsoft tries to be cool with a different type of commercial. You can see that they're trying to put hype behind the Zune by putting it on YouTube."
--Station17.org

"Let's see where Zune's heading--I just hope that Microsoft's not trying to be something that they're not. They're not hip, they're not agile, and they're not visionary--the reason why we use Microsoft products is because we're a creature of habits."
