AMD likely to announce ATI deal

by Tom Krazit

Advanced Micro Devices is planning to make a major announcement on Monday morning, according to a company representative. Details were unavailable, but it looks likely that the deal could involve graphics processor and chipset maker ATI Technologies.

AMD executives Robert Rivet and Hector Ruiz will hold a press conference prior to the opening of Wall Street on Monday morning. If earlier rumors prove true, the deal could allow the company to provide packages of silicon to its customers, similar to Intel's approach.

The deal could also complicate AMD's relationship with ATI rival Nvidia, which makes chipsets that are used with AMD products.
