AOL has partnered with McAfee to get technology for pieces of a new, soon-to-be-announced security and PC care package, CNET News.com has learned.

AOL is preparing to enter the security fray with a product dubbed "Total Care" that it plans to market to the general public, not just its subscribers, according to sources familiar with the company's plans.

The product will include key security and PC care features matching Microsoft's recently launched Windows Live OneCare product and upcoming products from Symantec and McAfee, the sources said.

McAfee will provide technology for at least part of AOL's Total Care. AOL is already a significant sales channel for McAfee. McAfee software is currently part of the AOL Safety and Security Center, which offers a firewall, antivirus, anti-spyware and phishing protection to AOL subscribers at no cost.

Santa Clara, Calif.-based McAfee on Tuesday announced packaging for its newly integrated consumer products, which are due in beta this month and in final form this summer.
