Sony, Matsushita propose spec for high dev video camera

Rivals Sony and Matsushita Electric (Panasonic in the U.S.) have jointly proposed a per-second specification for high-definition video cameras, according to EE Times. The elegantly named AVCHD format will record 1080i and 720p signals and let consumer record HD images with an eight centimeter DVD recordable disc.

Data transfer rate is maximum 18 megabits per second.

A few companies have come out with high dev video cameras for consumers, but they cost around $2,000. The price will drop over the next two years. Panansonic wants to come out with models for around $800 in 2007 while some companies such as Ambarella is making chips to drop the price.
