Phase One pumps up RAW photo conversion tools

by Candace Lombardi

Phase One last week released an upgrade for its Capture One tools, software for converting RAW digital-photo files into usable images. Capture One Pro 3.7.4, which gives users control of color balance, tone and contrast without altering the original file, now runs natively on both Intel-based and PowerPC Macs, as well as Windows PCs.

Phase One says the update will increase the detail capture rate for RAW files on Intel-based Macs by 40 percent, and that the processing rate for RAW files is 15 percent faster on both Intel and PowerPC Macs.

It also claims that Windows users will see as much as a 200 percent increase in speed with Capture One 3.7.4 when in the high-speed capture option, and a 10 percent increase overall in RAW file processing.

Phase One has also added recognition of RAW files from the Canon EOS 30D, Sony DSC-R1, Pentax *ist DL, DL2 and DS2 cameras, and all Phase One P series digital-camera backs.

The upgrade is free to licensed Capture One owners and 499 euros (about $615) for first-time buyers.
