Sony inches up with new TV/PC display

by Shawn Conaway

Sony has announced the next in its HT display series--a 20-inch LCD PC display that doubles as a television. The MFM-HT205 will be available in April for around $900. The HT series includes the 19-inch MFM-HT95 display and 17-inch MFM-HT75 display. All of the HT series PC/TV displays have a built-in NTSC television tuner.

The replacement of the old-school home entertainment center with a PC-based digital entertainment center is looking more inevitable as VCRs are being phased out in favor of DVRs and Window XP Media Center Edition-based PCs and HDTVs replace analog TV and analog receivers.

The 205 lets home owners watch multimedia content from either a PC\Mac or DVD through a single high-definition display. The sleek design on the 205 looks impressive, but the 1680x1050 resolution looks even more so. The LCD display has an aspect ratio of 16:9 and viewing angles of 170/170 degrees.

The high-definition display is able to play television or DVDs in wide-screen and picture-in-picture modes. It also has a picture-and-picture mode that allows consumers to watch TV and use the computer at the same time.

The 205 has HD-15 and DVI-HDCP inputs, as well as the standard S-video, component and composite inputs. To round out the package, the 205 features two 3-watt speakers and a 5-watt subwoofer.
