Ten rules for start-ups

by Margaret Kane

As bloggers recovered from their Thanksgiving Day feasts, they could take time to ponder Evan Williams' "Ten Rules for Web Startups."

Evan Williams

Williams has some background in the area. He was a co-founder of Pyra Labs, makers of Blogger, which is now part of Google. He's currently the CEO of Odeo, a podcasting company.

The list, consisting of simple suggestions ranging from "Be Narrow" to "Be Agile," may seem obvious to some, but in a world where start-ups come and go at a moment's notice, a little help can't hurt.

Blog community response:

"More like a list of zen principles, but I'll let my buddhist readers comment on that."
--Brewed Fresh Daily

"I think these are great -- they're the kind of thing I wish I'd known back when I was starting a company."
--Boingboing

"It's a very wise list, and it seems like a lot of startups I'm seeing right now are doing a pretty good job of following the list. Imagine, people might actually be smarter after dot-com bubble experiences!"

After 5 years, Firefox faces new challenges

Mozilla helped reshape the Web since releasing Firefox 1.0 five years ago. Now it's got a reawakened Microsoft and Google Chrome to reckon with.

There's a map for that: GPS or smartphone?

Almost every handset comes with mapping software these days, but standalone GPS devices are becoming more affordable than ever.
