An explosion in San Francisco's financial district a few blocks from News.com's offices shattered windows and alarmed downtown shoppers.

It wasn't entirely clear what caused the 10 a.m. blast, but by early afternoon police were saying that an underground electrical transformer was the most likely culprit.

Police quickly blocked off about seven square blocks of the downtown area near the intersection of Post and Kearny, and soon crowds were gathering to catch a glimpse of the blast scene.

We've posted a photo gallery of the scene taken around 11 a.m.
