Bloggers blog about blogging

Bloggers love to talk. And one of the topics they love to talk about is blogging. Combine that with a blog search engine and a new study about blogging, and you get a bit of self-referentialism of almost epic proportions.

Blog search engine Technorati recently put out a study about the "State of the Blogosphere."

The study was picked up by the BBC, which wrote an article about it, noting the company's claims that the number of blogs Technorati tracks rose to more than 14.2 million by the end of July, up from 7.8 million in March. That translates to "a weblog created every second," the BBC wrote.

Bloggers picked up on the article, and began linking to it. Which bumped the BBC article to the No. 1 spot on Technorati's list of the most popular blog news items. (Interestingly, it's also the No. 2 most popular link; one link is to the British version, the other is to the international one.)

It's like an Internet version of one of those pictures of a guy, holding a picture of himself, holding a picture of himself??

Blog community response:

"In fact, in the time it took me to post this, 63 new blogs were created..."
--Scam City version 8.0

"With blogs popping up at blog-per-second speed, it's going to be interesting to see whether quantity will come at the price of quality."
--Dogbert: barking up the wrong tree

"I always thought of myself as someone who doesn't go with the flow. Well, apparently the flow is here and I'm sure as hell drowning in it."
--Cannot Be Trusted On My Own
