When it comes to being quotable, Jedi knights are no match for a Confederate rogue, a Mafia don or even a little girl from Kansas.
The American Film Institute this week revealed the 100 most memorable movie quotes, as decided by 1,500 film artists, critics and historians.
Techies who've long been light saber-carrying members of the "Star Wars" fan club will have to settle for an eighth-place finish for "May the Force be with you," the Jedi variation on "godspeed."
Perhaps as a consolation prize to the interstellar auteur behind the six-movie series, the film industry group is giving George Lucas its 2005 lifetime achievement award.
The top five quotes of all time, in descending order: "Frankly, my dear, I don't give a damn" (Gone With the Wind); "I'm going to make him an offer he can't refuse" (The Godfather); "You don't understand! I coulda had class. I coulda been a contender. I could've been somebody, instead of a bum, which is what I am" (On the Waterfront); "Toto, I've got a feeling we're not in Kansas anymore" (The Wizard of Oz); and "Here's looking at you, kid" (Casablanca).
The only computer-related quote that made it onto the list, at No. 78: "Open the pod bay doors, HAL" (2001: A Space Odyssey). There was no top 100 love, alas, for the dramatic paean to Unix in the denouement of "Jurassic Park."
