Any U.S. Net phone operator must offer enhanced 911 if its subscribers can call, or get calls from, traditional landline and cell phones, according to Federal Communications Commission order released Friday.

That's a large swath of, if not all, VoIP operators.

"We believe that a service that enables a customer to do everything or nearly everything and more (as) using an analog telephone, can be required to route 911 calls to the appropriate destination," the 90-page order states.

The FCC decided May 19th that VoIP operators must offer 911 and accompany each call with the dialer's address and phone number. On Friday the FCC released the actual order.
