Intel developing server chip in India

by Michael Kanellos
Engineers at Intel are designing a processor for the server market in India, a first for the company.

The chip is a next-generation server chip, according to Intel President Ketan Sampat, which means it should come out soon. He would not discuss code-names, but Intel does have a Xeon chip on its roadmap code-named Whitefield coming in 2007 that will be able to fit in both Itainum-based and Xeon-based servers. Whitefield is the name of the road leading to one of Bangalore's tech parks. Typically, the design teams pick a geographic feature near where they are located as a code-name.

Although it's the first processor, it won't be Intel's first Indian chip. A 915 chipset released earlier this year was developed at the Bangalore facilities.

A successful chip can raise the prominence of a regional office at Intel. The Pentium M for notebooks and the Centrino chip bundle were concocted in Israel.
