Think that interest in the handheld market is waning? Or that Microsoft's handheld operating system has no appeal? Tell that to these folks.

More than 13,000 people, hoping to upgrade their iPaq or Axim handhelds with Microsoft's new Windows Mobile 2003 Second Edition operating system, have signed a petition addressed to Hewlett-Packard CEO Carly Fiorina or Dell. (In case you're keeping count, more than 10,000 have signed the HP petition, and more than 3,000 have signed the Dell petition.)

The latest version of Windows Mobile was announced in late March. It added several new features, including one that enables devices to quickly shift from landscape mode to portrait mode and another that supports higher screen resolutions. Older Dell and HP devices are not currently upgradeable to Microsoft's new operating system, and the companies haven't announced plans to make an update available.

Device owners have also taken to a number of forums, including one on HP's site that threatens to boycott products.
