Google Street View goes mobile

by Stephen Shankland

Street View endows Google Maps with a driver's-eye view of the world, and now people actually on the street will be able to use it, too.

The company announced a new version of its Google Maps for Mobile software that includes support for Street View, as well as walking directions and reviews of businesses. Google said the new version is faster too.

The new features work on BlackBerrys with color screens and on mobile devices with Java abilities. Sorry, iPhone users. Visiting the Google site with an iPhone produces this message: "Sorry, Google Maps does not work on your Apple iPhone."

The move isn't a surprise. Google demonstrated Street View on a phone using the company's Android operating system in May, hooked into the phone's hardware so the view would change according to which way the user oriented the phone. The Android phones are due to be announced Sept. 23.

Update 1:56 p.m. PDT: The Google Mobile blog now has some details and an explanatory video.

I downloaded, installed, and ran (once I figured out the new icon) the software fine on a BlackBerry. Launching it shows a start-up screen with the Street View person icon with brief instructions.

I did find the new version of the software somewhat more responsive, though data transfer speeds still impose a fair amount of waiting.

The Street View option is enabled when you click on an area; after a pause the software tells you whether Street View is available, and clicking the option overlays a pretty small Street View window atop the map. Using the scroll wheel pans the view left or right, again with some waiting on the network.

"Sorry, Google Maps does not work on your Apple iPhone."

Could it technically work, or does the iPhone not support something required for Street View?
If it CAN technically work, are they just in the process of working on it, or are they choosing to dis the by-far largest mobile-phone market share online?

The iPhone doesn't support Java or Flash, so there's really no good way to make it work short of writing something completely custom for the iPhone, which considering Android is unlikely to happen. There are already third parties who have hacked together a working Java, so I have no idea why Apple would continue to exclude it, but who knows what Not-Invented-Here is going on in Jobs head these days.

If the iPhone supported the Java runtime, Mobile StreetView would probably work on the iPhone without any issues.

But Apple decided not to enable Java runtime support on the iPhone, I believe because of the space and power that it consumes.

>> "the by-far largest mobile-phone market share online?"

You're kidding right? Blame apple for restricting your choices for software.

OK, post install update.

Got it installed and there weren't too many locations in my area with street view, nor was there any visual indication of whether street view was available for a location.

I looked up a location where street view exists (Golden Gate Bridge), and thought it was cool, but then felt it took too long to refresh for how fast I was (trying) to scroll.

I think it is a cool feature, will probably differ from my Blackberry to an Android or other device, but one that I don't really see ever using. I don't want to poke around a map having to guess if street view is there.

So far the only major difference for me is a complete inability to lock on to a GPS satellite, where the previous version had no trouble. I see no "Street View" menu option or other related change.

Hopefully the previous version is still available somewhere.

i'd much rather have street view and traffic on my iphone, and in the EU, especially germany! i could not care less for live maps....!

why is google not signing an agreement witth the comapny that runs the traffic sensors attached to each bridge crossing the autobahn??? with that google maps/earth could easily supply data for germany...

and why is the iphone google maps app always the last to receive updates to google maps mobile??? with the built in update feature via itunes it would be so easy to update google maps on the iphone!!!
