Report: Facebook growing faster than MySpace

MySpace is still the top dog among social networks in the United States, according to researcher Hitwise, but its No. 2 rival Facebook is gaining fast.

MySpace attracted as much as 73 percent of U.S. visitor market share for social networks in June, down by 6 percent from the same period last year, according to a report released Wednesday from Hitwise. Facebook, its more staid social rival, lured about 17 percent of the U.S. market, up 40 percent from June 2007.

It's still a wide margin, but Facebook's threat looms large. And Facebook's COO Sheryl Sandberg emphasized this week that the company's primary goal is growth.

Also of note was MyYearbook.com's ascent in the last year. Its market share grew by 318 percent to a 1.54 percent market share in June.

Hitwise reported a similar story in relation to time spent on social networks. In June, MySpace commanded the most time from its members, who spend an average of 31 minutes on the site, down by 4 percent from the previous year. In contrast, Facebook members logged an average of 21 minutes, up by 41 percent from the comparable period last year.

In the United Kingdom, Facebook's picture is even rosier. There, the company accounted for 45 percent of the U.K. market share for social networks in June, a year-to-year rise of 188 percent. Former leader Bebo.com was No. 2 with a 25 percent share; and MySpace ranked third with a nearly 15 percent share.

Personally I wish one of these social networks would just "win" the war.

First all my friends told me I had to be on Friendster, then MySpace, and now Facebook. There have been at least a couple others that I choose to ignore in between. Not to mention the few dating, professional, and scheduling sites I've used. Phew, thats a lot of social coordination and passwords to keep un-muddled.

Then of course there is the having to maintain chat accounts on AIM, MSN, Y!, and Google Chat to keep all of my friends satisfied. Thank Trillian and Pigeon for creating a one stop shop for these!

I'm personally tired of having to shuffle my personal information all over cyberspace every few months. Whoever creates the next killer app better create and automatic port feature so I never have to create a new social profile from scratch again.

First, these percentages of market share mean nothing without numbers. How many people in England are actually on social networks? Give us numbers!

Second, how would someone actually win? Its like saying Coke won and Pepsi lost. Taco Bell won and Del Taco lost. They co-exist!

Facebook started to suck when they introduced all of those pointless "applications". Now Myspace has social networking applications and they suck too. I'm a member of both but rarely spend much time on either. As for who is the "winner" or "loser", they both suck.

Facebook is definitely on a role! In The Netherlands there is a local community called Hyves and have about 7 MLN users equally to 45% of Dutch inhabitants.

While I had already switched from Hyves to Facebook in 2007, in the past 3 months I saw a whole network of young asians (20-30+) take the switch. I even received an e-mail from a friend in Hyves telling all his hyves friends that he would leave Hyves as he didn?t want to spend time updating 2 social networks separately.

Personally I have found ways to integrate my Wordpress blog into both Facebook and Hyves, even in Linkedin. And my Twitter is updating the ?what are you doing now? status in Hyves and Facebook.

But truly - as I?m 30 years old - I?m a Facebook fan generating probably more than 30 pageviews a day in facebook.

And professionally I?ve come to the conclusion that all of the people out there who are thinking about creating a new community for whatever group, they should look at these articles:
- http://seekingalpha.com/article/35533-social-networking-sites-facebook-grows-myspace-slows
- http://blog.nielsen.com/nielsenwire/online_mobile/leading-social-networking-sites-still-growing/

I?ve written a blog about how to deserve your own community in 7 steps on my own blog. I?m always looking for more visitors on my blog, so please have a look ;)
