The online auction site operator today revealed that Sunday, December 2 was the biggest mobile shopping day ever for eBay Marketplaces in the U.S. and PayPal globally.
That seems to defy conventional wisdom, but eBay says it actually makes a lot of sense.
Steve Yankovich, vice president of mobile at eBay, said that Sunday typically is a "day of relaxation," but because consumers always have their smartphones in hand, it's easy to shop whenever they feel like it.
"We're in a paradigm shift," he said.
Along with December 2 being the biggest mobile shopping day for eBay Marketplaces, PayPal also revealed that its total global mobile-payment volume that day exceeded Cyber Monday by more than $1 million. That made December 2 the biggest mobile shopping day in the history of PayPal.
In case anyone had doubts about the growing importance of mobile devices, eBay's data provides some pretty strong evidence. As the company noted, mobile commerce barely existed four years ago. But this year, eBay expects to transact more than $10 billion in mobile volume from its mobile apps and PayPal.
eBay noted in September that its mobile apps had been downloaded 100 million times since being launched in late 2008.
