One of the Internet's most popular social networks pushed its doors wide open today -- Pinterest has started open registration.
This means users can sign up for an account without having to wait for an invite, the company said in a blog post. Before today, people had to request an invite from Pinterest or be invited by a friend who already had a Pinterest account. Invites allowed the site to control the volume of new users so that its servers were not overwhelmed, according to Pinterest.
Now, the site can handle any new traffic that comes its way.
"We're really excited to have the capacity to offer Pinterest to more people and if you're a Pinner with friends who've been waiting on the sidelines, we hope you'll let them know," the blog reads.
In addition to using a Facebook or Twitter login, users can now also sign up with just an e-mail address.
Will Pinterest see an uptick in their numbers after opening up registration? If so, it would bolster its already swiftly growing popularity.
Although the company doesn't publicly share user stats, one report from April said the site had 4 million daily unique visitors at the beginning of this year.
