With the economy reeling and layoffs piling up, business-networking site LinkedIn has been not-so-surprisingly hopping.

Market researcher ComScore reported that LinkedIn's unique visitors rose to 7.7 million, a 22 percent increase over December, TechCrunch reported Saturday. And not only are more people visiting LinkedIn, but they're hanging around longer as well. Total minutes spent on the site last month more than doubled from December to 96.8 million, according to TechCrunch.

More people are helping out friends looking for jobs as well. Recommendations were up 65 percent last month over December, TechCrunch said.

looks like most LinkedIn users consider it a p2p job searching site rather than a business development tool....

nevertheless our company Eyeline.mobi uses it for business development purposes. Our marketers offered to do this and now after several months of activity on LinkedIn it proves to be fruitful tool

I use it as a business development tool. Their answer section is unbelievable. You simply ask any question related to business and the entire linkedin community is available to answer you.

I have also been re-connected to several past associates.

Hardly surprising that sites associated with job hunting gain popularity as the economy sours. I think the real story here is that LinkedIn?s growth greatly surpasses the trend. I?d love to see the comparative data.

As their traffic grows so do their rules. They are locking down their users.

LinkedIn is more like a platform for professionals to meet up... Slowly it's turning to something like Facebook.

I recently canceled my account because I was getting 3 - 5 calls a day from job placement agencies. It was a great tool to connect with my friends and colleagues, but the pestering negated the benefits.
