YouTube battling 'Porn Day' campaign

Updated at 4:40 p.m. PDT with Google comment.

YouTube was busy deleting porn videos on Wednesday after users of forums at a rival site and an imageboard site declared a "Porn Day" campaign against the popular video service.

The forums at video site eBaum's World and 4chan organized the mass porn "carpet bombing" on YouTube, according to Ars Technica.

YouTube has been removing the videos as fast as it can, but even videos that are removed are still showing up in search results with explicit images in the thumbnails, the report said.

It could take a couple of days for all the explicit results to be removed from the search results, Google spokesman Scott Rubin told Ars Technica.

In a phone interview with CNET News late on Wednesday, Rubin said that in addition to the porn videos were removed as soon as community members alert YouTube to them, certain channels where the posters were bragging about the campaign and listing the videos were being disabled.

"This group of pranksters thought it would be funny to load a bunch of porn to YouTube," he said. "This is an unfortunate, and I think poorly directed, prank. I think our systems are doing really well at removing content that violates the guidelines."

Someone should just get rid of that site altogether. What a waste of bandwidth.
by arkilo May 20, 2009 4:29 PM PDT
ha, sue them for what? a day of hilarity on the tubes? I think they should do this monthly. Keep the youtube staff on their e-toes.
by refriedfood May 20, 2009 5:17 PM PDT
Get rid of what? Youtube? I agree -- get rid of it.
by dorkfish2 May 20, 2009 6:02 PM PDT

??? why get rid of youtube???
by Wookiee-1138 May 21, 2009 1:37 PM PDT
I doubt ebaumsworld was behind it. It's common practice for /b/tards to blame it on them.

Sue eBaums World? Ha. It'd never work. If anything needs to go down, it's Youtube. Since Google took it over, it's become nothing but annoying. Youtube was good; once. Now it's just outdated and trying to catch up with places better then itself.
by sigzero May 20, 2009 3:19 PM PDT
That is exactly what Youtube should do...sue ebamsworld.

Poor journalism, though this is a blog, so what can you expect. Clearly it wasn't ebaum's world's doing, and 4chan isn't a site for hackers. In fact, there was no hacking of the site whatsoever.

Who mentioned hacking, anywhere?

@ Police_States_of_America
There is reason to believe it did start on 4chan. /b/ to be specific, but even if they didn't start it, they had a big part in it.

4chan.org had nothing to do with this. We don't do stuff like this. We have standards and this is so lowbrow. We always get blamed for ebaumsworld shenanigans and I, for one, would like to see their leader, Eric Bauman, answer for this kind of criminal activity and besmirching moot's good name.

moot is an innovator -one of the 100 most influential people in the world according to Time magazine- and he doesn't deserve this black mark on his reputation. moot does not tolerate 'raids' such as this on his site, on this he has been very clear. And the overwhelming majority of his userbase don't condone this kind of bahaviour either for that matter.

I'm an upstanding adult citizen in lawl enforcement and I wouldn't be caught dead with these clowns from ebaums.

Frankly, I am disgusted at the behaviour of this Ebaumsworld. I googled their site and couldn't believe what they have on there. Is that truly fapping material?

My little Johnny was trying to watch some Jonas Brothers videos this morning, he's in love with them, and what does he find? Horse **** waving in his face! I mean, what sort of world is this that we can let our little ones loose to find such disgusting material on a site like Youtube. I have trusted that site for a long time and it appears their moderators are just not up to the job. Maybe if they were faster they might protect out wee ones from all this disgusting filth!

Technically it's not their fault but they were woefully inept so must share some of the blame. They took hours to respond and even now, much of this filth is up there with tags like Britain's Got Talent. From what I gather, the ebaumers used the same 'poundcake' tag (and why poundcake for god's sake? my poor mother would get the shock of her life if she found pornography whilst looking for a recipe!) for all of them; surely it can't be that hard to delete all the poundcake videos and reinstate the wholesome ones later.
by darfjono May 21, 2009 7:43 AM PDT
yeah, what are they thinking, letting the jonas brothers be on that site. what disgusting filth. i'm ashamed of your johnny.
by thelemurking May 21, 2009 1:19 PM PDT
Maybe your little Johnny is fapping away at those Jonas Brothers videos when you aren't around ;)

You should teach your son how to live a life, not how to be gay.

"I mean, what sort of world is this that we can let our little ones loose to find such disgusting material on a site like Youtube."

That's the problem right there. Be a parent: don't let the little ones run loose and unprepared.

I applaud anyone who defies prudish standards. in the 21st century, we need to all grow up and learn that sex is OK and good and natural. The days of Puritanism are dead, so long live freedom.

I'm not sure that bombarding a public site with pornography is someone's attempt to constructively embrace sexuality...
by Michichael May 20, 2009 5:37 PM PDT
If ebaum's world is advertising an organizing a mass breach of contract (EULA, remember to read it!) owned by YouTube, as well as intentionally disrupting, posting sexually explicit images, etc... there's quite a bit they could be sued for - or even punished federally for promoting a federal crime (making pornography or copyrighted content available)

Your revulsion feeds them.

Your publicity strengthens them.

Your laws can't stop them.

Time to start growing a thicker skin and stop using the intarwebs as a babysitter.

Exactly, thank you. Letting the kids watch videos for a little while here and there is hardly "using the Internet as a babysitter," geez.

Dangerous game. How much bandwidth does Ebaumsworld have? What if Youtube fought back by asking all its visitors to post cute kitty pictures and other glurge on Ebw?

They'd have a legitimate reason for suing?
Just because a community on a site organizes raids on other sites, doesn't mean that the site owner is responsible, UNLESS they encouraged and done nothing to stop them.

This is also the importance of why forum owners shouldn't delete threads that contain potentially illegal content, it is just binned for later. (at least, any smart owner, if they never, they threw out evidence in their favour)

Following the excitement of "Porn Day" I want to set the record straight: ebaumsworld.com was not behind the spamming of YouTube. There is a long history of the ebaumsworld.com and 4chan.org communities competing for the "bad boy" crown on the Internet. For years the communities of these two sites have done battle to see who could cause the most havoc across the World Wide Web. ebaumsworld.com respects the terms and conditions of sites like YouTube and would never instigate such behavior. If you want to learn more about the history of ebaumsworld.com's involvement in pranks on the Internet I invite you to search our blogs http://www.ebaumsworld.com/blogs/ and forum http://forum.ebaumsworld.com/. HAHAHA eBaumsworld has no respect for anything. The majority of their content is stolen and then embedded with their logo. Of course a little cleanup and pruning can make it appear as though eBaums crew of misfits had nothing to do with it.

But really, no one is going to buy into that load of BS that eBaumsworld respects Terms of Service.

you can't really blame 4chan for organizing anything. people of all types visit it to relieve boredom. there are as many immature kids that are all-too anxious to raid another site as there are sensible people just giggling through the 'you raff you ruse' thread. it's just a place where people can be. it would be like blaming the sidewalk for a riot because that's where all the people were standing.

Are you really that stupid?? So, I can rob a bank because I am bored? Or hack a website because I am bored? Or how about shoot your family in the head because I am bored? Or how about if I get a bunch of BORED friends and we go and start mugging people? Or how about I get that same group of BORED friends and we cause a banking site to "buckle" under the strain of a attack and your deposits and bills don't get paid on time because of it? Or how about my BORED friends start carjacking people. Not to hurt them, but just drive their vehicle 10 miles from where they are?

What a stupid comment you made!!! Maybe it's BOREDOM that's the reason we have as much cra* going on as we do!
