Sun confirms 1,300 layoffs
Sun Microsystems has laid off 1,300 workers, part of a planned sequence of job reductions first revealed in November when the company announced that it was intending to shed 6,000 people, or 14 percent to 18 percent of its workforce.
The job losses are worldwide, and follow Sun's announcement in December that 130 jobs were going at the company's plant in Scotland.
In a statement, Sun said on Thursday that the layoffs were made across all levels "including vice presidents and directors." The cuts are part of a restructuring of the company, Sun said, that are intended to save between $700 million to $800 million each year. The company said it believed the restructuring would "result in a more efficient coverage model with resources aligned to growth opportunities."
According to the statement, the company believes cost-cutting measures and organizational changes "will put the company on track for improved financial performance."

UNIX is invincible. Microsoft just laidoff 5000. Sun solaris OS is so strong in stability, reliability, predictability, concept, implementation that just nothing can beat it.
LINUX has the curse of being open source and unsupported too!

- Sun should have laid off bigger chunks in 2002 if not before and the exec team knew it. In order for Sun to survive, they need to fix their identity crisis, am I a h/w, s/w or services company, go pure play channel model w/direct reps focusing on their top 100 or so WW accounts. Some of the best technology and people in the industry. I say 14-20K employees max..
