LAS VEGAS -- The 2013 CTIA kicked off today. The last event of the wireless show season, CTIA tends to be a bit quieter than Mobile World Congress and CES. Yet, there are plenty of new handsets, hotpots, and accessories on display at the Sands Expo. LAS VEGAS -- When the guys behind the dual-screen Android and e-ink YotaPhone say they're working on a hot spot, you know that the Yota Ruby isn't your average portable Wi-Fi router.
Just consider the hot spot's design. Unlike a lot of hot-spot bricks we see, this white device has smooth, rounded edges and a flat top and bottom (it'll come in black, too.) Different-colored LED lights behind the playful Yota insignia shine out to indicate if you're on 4G, 3G, or 2G, so you can tell at a glance.

LAS VEGAS--It sounds like a bad "Star Wars" pun, but the YotaPhone, a spinoff from a company responsible for making LTE routers and modems, is bringing a whole lot of Android innovation to a crowded field. In fact, it's the most interesting smartphone I've seen here at CES, and this is only the first device prototype out of a planned total of three before launch.
