CNET Car Tech: 2011 Scion xB Release Series

Scion has had a funny reception during its short history. Intended as a car for the young and ultrahip, it ended up being quite popular with baby boomers as well; whoops! But that's another story. In the video at hand, we take a look at the Scion xB Release Series for 2011, which is most certainly not a car with a lot of cross-generational appeal (though the Smurfs are eating it up). Brian Cooley takes you for a drive to check the tech.

Taking a kitchen sink approach to Scions at SEMA

Last year, Scion's booth at the SEMA Show was jam-packed with some of the craziest cars at the show. 2009 saw the continuation of that grand tradition.

This year, Scion brought out an xB with a built-in kitchen (sink and all!), another with its own dancefloor, and yet another that had been stretched into a pickup toting a matching custom scooter. Scion's other models also got some modding love in the form of a rally-prepped xD and a loud-and-low tC that seemed to have forgotten its roof.

2010 Scion xB: Bring your own cabin tech

With funky styling and a reputation built around heavy involvement from the tuner crowd and the sound-off set, we expected our Stingray Metallic 2010 Scion xB to be a technological powerhouse. Perusing the spec sheet before embarking on the first of many test drives, we were excited to see features such as Bluetooth hands-free calling, standard iPod connectivity, premium audio with navigation, and rear-seat entertainment. Yes, we were all grins.

However, by the end of that first test drive, we were ready to drive the xB off of a bridge. Nearly every bit of cabin tech was a source of … Read more

Scion will add 4th vehicle

DETROIT -- Scion plans to expand its model line from three vehicles to four.

Also, Scion Vice President Jack Hollis said: "Within the next two years, we will have a replacement tC" coupe.

The tC coupe will be nearly 7 years old when the redesign arrives, but such a long life cycle will not be the norm for Scion in the next decade.

"It will be different for each model," Hollis said at the Detroit auto show in January. "There are some that are going to be short. There are going to be three- to … Read more

Photos: Sick Scions at SEMA 2008

Scion, Toyota's youth-oriented sub-brand, has made vehicle customization tantamount to the experience of purchasing and owning its vehicles. So at the world's largest aftermarket car parts show, SEMA is hot Las Vegas, you can bet that Scion had a big presence with some truly unique vehicles.

Models ranged from an xB pickup truck conversion to a wide-body tC. Oddly, we didn't see any examples of the xD.

Photos: Build-it-yourself Scion xB

Scion is primarily known for two things: its young, trendy customer base and the customizability of its cars. Now the automaker is taking those two ideas forward in a novel way by partnering with Ridemakerz, a specialty retailer that allows its customers to build personalized scale models of production cars. Scion made the announcement of the partnership at the SEMA show here in Las Vegas, where Ridemakerz had set up version of one of its interactive stores. We wasted no time in rolling up our sleeves and getting to work building our own Scion xB model. Check out our gallery … Read more

Scion Little Deviant game, with spoilers

After being intrigued by Scion's Little Deviant campaign ads, I stumbled across a link to the Little Deviant site and gave it a try. The ad campaign is pleasantly dark, and designed to market the new Scion xB and xD. The Web site features a series of small games, the premise of which is that Sheeple are making the city bland and boring. Your job as a Little Deviant is to kill the Sheeple, because you can use their blood to decorate your car. Along the way, you apply a little war paint to yourself. The games are pretty … Read more

2008 Scion xB and xD first drive

Thursday morning was a good day for CNET Car Tech editors--we got to drive the 2008 Scion xB and 2008 Scion xD. Even since Scion was born (some say fully-formed, bursting out of Toyota's head), the xB has been a polarizing car: some hate it, some love it. Whatever your opinion, you have to admit that the car is unique. But the xB has been around for three years, and Scion needs to keep it fresh. The new xB has a smoother body and more powerful engine. It's also about a foot longer, with plenty of rear seat … Read more

Boxing day: 2008 Scion xB revealed in Chicago

Scion, Toyota's ultrahip brand, used the second morning of the Chicago Auto Show to launch the second incarnation of its hugely popular Scion xB. The boxy urban utility vehicle gets a makeover inside and out for its 2008 model year, with an all-new external profile, a bigger engine, bigger wheels, and some nice-to-have interior tech features. With rounded corners, wraparound headlights, and more sheet metal than its predecessor (1 foot longer, 3 inches wider, and 1 inch shorter), the 2008 xB has nearly eight more cubic feet than the previous-generation xB. To move its newly sculpted carcass around, the … Read more
