Nokia unveils E6, X7 smartphones

With a pair of new smartphones, Nokia is showing no immediate signs of letting up on its Symbian operating system.

The E6 and the X7, both announced today, will be the first smartphones to ship with Symbian Anna, the latest update to the mobile operating system, which is used primarily by Nokia. Earlier this year, however, Nokia signed a deal with Microsoft that will make Windows Phone 7 the principal operating system on its smartphones, with the shift the Microsoft OS starting as early as next year.

The Nokia E6 is designed with business customers in mind. It boasts a … Read more

Nokia ditches plans for X7 smartphone on AT&T

Nokia has canceled the U.S. release of a new smartphone that was supposed to be exclusive to AT&T, CNET has confirmed.

The Wall Street Journal first reported the news today, but a source close to the situation, who didn't want to be named, confirmed Nokia had pulled the plug on the launch of the new smartphone on AT&T's network.

The X7 smartphone hasn't been officially announced yet, but details of the device have been leaked online.

The X7, which is still expected to launch outside the U.S. on other carriers, is … Read more

NordicTrack x7i could let you jog on the moon

Your Technotronic playlist aside, running on a treadmill is inherently boring because you're stuck in a room running on the same platform. But what if you could switch things up and simulate actual, real-world topography?

The NordicTrack x7i Interactive Incline Trainer, which goes for $2,000, is loaded with Wi-Fi to interface with iFit Live, a fitness database that pulls actual trail and marathon routes from Google Maps (which, though not supported in the limited official workout library at this time, should really include Google Moon). Among the trails that are included: the Delicate Arch Trail at Arches National … Read more

New hybrids proclaim their German engineering

I'm a big fan of "German engineering"--that combined focus on power and precision that distinguishes the better automobiles designed or manufactured in Germany.

At Frankfurt's International Motor Show, BMW will be showing off two new hybrid cars intended to deliver the full promise of German engineering. This is no small thing because most hybrid cars to date have been lightly built and somewhat underpowered in order to improve fuel economy.

The two new BMWs are more like previous offerings from that company: big, solid cars with lots of power to maintain performance in spite of … Read more

DivX 7: H.264 w00tage and Blu-ray p0wnage

We'll admit it, we've got a soft spot for DivX. The much-used video codec started as a hack of Microsoft's proprietary MPEG-4 codec, and was born out of frustration with Microsoft's video-playback lameness. DivX quickly became an important ingredient of Internet video, but in an HD era, something with a little more power is needed. Oh look, here's DivX 7. Just the ticket.

Although the origins of DivX are as a codec, the future is likely to be very different, and revolves around device certification. For example, you might notice that virtually every DVD player … Read more

PhotoCopy keeps iPhoto and Flickr synced

Update: I mistakenly said this tool does two-way sync. PhotoCopy currently only moves photos one direction--from iPhoto to Flickr.

Having recently picked up one of the new MacBooks, I've been spending the last few days getting it up to speed with all my Web services and prior storage backups.

One of the biggest hurdles I'm trying to overcome is being too reliant on software, which is considerably easier with today's cloud services.

One that caught my eye on this front is PhotoCopy from 24x7 Digital. This $20 software program, which is Mac-only, hooks up with your iPhoto … Read more

Fuji camera kickin' it old school at PMA

Check out this beauty from Fujifilm, a 6x7 medium format camera with a tres old school bellows collapsing lens and, wait for it, film! (6x7, by the way, refers to the size in centimeters of the negative, so a 6cm by 7cm is over four times as large as old 35mm negatives.)

I used to own a smaller version (645, or 6cm by 4.5cm) of one of their rangefinders and it was a beautiful machine (unfortunately stolen by someone who didn't realize what they had I'm quite sure). Fuji rangefinders have always been known for their second-to-none … Read more

Cowon retires iAudio X5 MP3 player; X7 set for summer debut

MP3 player manufacturer Cowon has announced that their iAudio X5 MP3 player will soon be discontinued. To fill the void, reports claim that Cowon will release an iAudio X7 model sometime this summer. The X5 has enjoyed a loyal following since it debuted in 2005, due partly to its excellent sound quality. There's no word on exactly what the X7 has in store. Plenty of rumors abound and even a suspicious mock-up has surfaced.

Here's what we do know. Cowon's latest D2 MP3 player uses a touch screen. Cowon's upcoming Q5 uses a touch screen. The … Read more
