WonderCon: Where Droids, cosplayers, and authors collide

WonderCon 2009 might've had a smaller crowd than in previous years--it certainly felt that way walking the convention floor at San Francisco's Moscone Center. Just don't tell anyone who was there.

From lectures on superhero physics, to an impressively diverse display of costumes, to discussions with Pulitzer Prize-winning authors and fan-favorite writers, San Francisco was the place to be for fanboys and fangirls last weekend. There were even deals on Obama comics.

While fans combed the floor for deals, CNET's Eric Franklin was there to document even more WonderCon action.

WonderCon 2009: 'Up' flies away

Pixar showed the first 45 minutes of its next animated feature "Up" at WonderCon here in San Francisco this weekend. I did not see all of those minutes, due to there being some limited-to-first-250-people-to-come BS I didn't have the patience to deal with.

I did get to see about 17 minutes of the film, however, via five scenes Pixar debuted. My impressions after viewing the clips is that the movie looks very good--visually, conceptually, and just for pure entertainment.

"Up" deals with a curmudgeonly old man tying a bunch of balloons to his house and … Read more

WonderCon 2009: 'Terminator Salvation' director works the crowd

For a long time after its debut in 1991, I considered "Terminator 2" my favorite movie, with the first "Terminator" comfortably placed in my top 5. "Terminator 3," although entertaining, did not live up to that high James Cameron standard.

Even with Christian Bale ("Batman") as John Connor, I've yet to get excited about this fourth entry in the series, "Terminator Salvation". At WonderCon on Saturday, the movie's director, McG yelled at me for a good 30 minutes to get me to change my mind.

Well not directly … Read more

WonderCon 2009: Paramount debuts new 'Star Trek' trailer

JJ Abrams (creator of "Lost" and "Alias") was on hand Saturday along with the new Spock (Zachary Quinto), Uhura (Zoe Saldana), and the new James T. Kirk (Chris Pine) to debut the brand new trailer for "Star Trek."

Unfortunately, I did not get a seat close to the screen, so it was difficult to make out exactly what the trailer consisted of, but for a detailed analysis, check here.

It was also tough to make out dialog with the volume of the sound system set super high, but a few choice moments I remember:… Read more

WonderCon 2009: First 22 minutes of 'Watchmen' equals geekasm

I'm not gonna front. This is what I came to WonderCon to see. Warner Bros. had already shown the first 22 minutes of the "Watchmen" movie two weeks ago at the New York Comicon, but this was the Bay Area's first chance to see the footage, and it does not disappoint.

*HEAVY SPOILER ALERT* Director Zack Snyder was on hand to introduce the footage, which by now you've probably already read a play by play of. If not, check here. What I'll do here is just give my impressions of what I saw.

WonderCon 2009: 'Wonder Woman' movie kicks editor in teeth, makes him cry uncle

To think I almost decided to skip the "Wonder Woman" movie. I'm a huge comic book geek. I love me some Batman and Wolverine for sure. Wonder Woman, however, never really did it for me. Never enough to buy a single issue of her comic, at least.

That was until Friday. After watching the "Wonder Woman" animated movie, I actually bought a Wonder Woman comic for the first time.

My decision to do this, as you might surmise, has everything to do with the movie blowing me the "eff" away. It stomped on … Read more

WonderCon 2009: And you are there!

Not everyone can make it to WonderCon every year, I understand that. Honestly though, if you don't deal well with crowds, you should probably stay home, because wow.

The crowds on Saturday are probably the reason I'm not going back on Sunday. I can take only so much of clueless geeks bumping my camera, walking into my shot, standing in the middle of heavy traffic areas, (apparently) not bathing that day, and making dumb "purist" comments about changes from the graphic novel to the "Watchmen" movie, only to be proven completely wrong.

Yeah, I'… Read more

Favreau: Technology has transformed indie film landscape

If you ever feel your comments in online forums are nothing but a droplet in the vast Sea of the Web, take heart. They may change the course of the next Hollywood blockbuster.

Actor, writer, and director Jon Favreau gave a shout-out to our friend the Internet Saturday, saying fans had a direct impact on his upcoming movie with their posts online. Favreau held a panel discussion to support Iron Man, a live-action movie based on the Marvel superhero, at the WonderCon comic book convention held in San Francisco over the weekend. When he wanted to cast Robert Downey Jr. … Read more
