Digital City 102: MacBook Air; body scanners land at JFK; and world's worst video game pitch

Is Apple's new 11-inch MacBook Air the ultimate ultraportable laptop? We compare and contrast with Acer's similar TimelineX, and also debate everything from the Samsung Galaxy Tab's contract-required pricing to the latest in privacy-invading body scanners coming to JFK and other NY-area airports.

Digital City 101: Apple event predictions and real guitars vs. game guitars

After 100 relatively trouble-free weekly episodes, it's at number 101 that things really start to fall apart. Over the weekend, our entire video podcast studio was ripped out and replaced with a new high-definition version.

That's great, and today's video stream looked awesome, but unfortunately, the day one gremlins are also holding our video of this week's show hostage.

Until we get that worked out, you'll have to settle for the audio version, available below.

In actual news, Apple has a big press event this week, so naturally we're in full-on prediction mode, especially when it comes to 11-inch MacBook Air laptops. We also debate the coming 4G/LTE wave in New York, and what it means for the iPhone/Android wars.

Finally, we take a look at the new deluxe Rock Band 3 Fender Mustang guitar, and compare it to a real-life guitar. Pics and a side-by-side video demo are here.

Digital City 100: Comic Con costumes and the ultimate video game t-shirt collection

Unless we've miscounted somewhere along the way (a distinct possibility), this week marks the 100th episode of our little outpost on the information superhighway.

Of course, it wouldn't be a Digital City show if everything ran smoothly, so you shouldn't be surprised to find that Scott has been called away on urgent business and is here only in spirit (plus, he sent a note).

Standing in is CNET News reporter Greg Sandoval, who joins the discussion on Windows 7 phones and Google's top-secret music cloud project -- but is stunned into silence by our extreme nerd-out over the past weekend's New York Comic Con.

The rest of us, however, happily narrate our photo galleries from the show, showcasing the usual collections of costumed character and overpriced collectibles.

Speaking of collectables, in honor of our centenary, we're pleased to offer the greatest Digital City giveaway ever. We're sending one viewer/listener a sweet pile a video game t-shirts -- the ultra-rare promo-only items sent to journalists and industry insiders. These are all mint condition, never worn, and include shirts for Dead Space, GTA4, and many more.

To win the Ultimate Video Game T-Shirt Collection just hop on over to the show's Twitter account, @digitalcitycnet and follow us, then RT the post about this episode.

We'll pick a random winner at the end of the week, and there are also a pile of runner-up prizes, including some Red Dead Redemption swag and a copy of the new Final Fantasy: The 4 Heroes of Light game for DS.

Special bonus: At long last, download the show's theme song as a free MP3 here!

Report: Microsoft lands Win Phone 7 partners

Microsoft has signed deals with leading smartphone makers to use its upcoming Windows Phone 7 operating system, according to a report.

Dell, Asus, LG, HTC, and Samsung are planning on releasing devices using Microsoft's mobile OS, Greg Sullivan, senior product manager for Microsoft, told U.K.-based tech news site Pocket Lint this week. The software is expected to be released later this year.

Microsoft is making a bid to catch up to rival phone platforms with Windows Phone 7, which the company unveiled earlier this year.

The software, reviewed here by CNET's Bonnie Cha, is a revamped … Read more

Microsoft's mobile strategy should learn from Android

Microsoft just closed the door on Firefox development for its new Windows Phone 7 Series. It didn't overtly discriminate against Firefox developers. Instead, it did what we increasingly see platform owners like Apple do:

Microsoft set up rigid development parameters that favor its own technology over alternative approaches.

I don't think Microsoft did this because it's evil. I suspect it simply wants to create an Apple-like experience where everything "just works" because the experience is tightly controlled.

But that doesn't make the decision wise. And it's not actually consistent with Microsoft's past, … Read more

Microsoft's desktop future may look like a phone

Competition in the personal computer market is heating up, even as it becomes increasingly difficult to distinguish just what we mean when we talk about a PC. Airline flight attendants seem to be able to discern the difference between mobile phones and personal computers in their in-flight announcements, but the vendors who make and sell them increasingly can't.

It is precisely this fuzziness that offers Google and Apple a chance to get a leg up on Microsoft, but is also why Microsoft may be able to cement its lead.

Google is clear about its aims: it wants to get … Read more

CNET News Daily Podcast: Skype coming to Verizon phones

Lots of mobile news in today's podcast, since we're knee-deep in news from the Mobile World Congress show in Barcelona. One of the biggest pieces, besides the Windows 7 Phone unveiling over the weekend, is that Skype is finally coming to Verizon users on a handful of phones. This will bring some 3G VoIP call goodness to users--that is, as long as they have one of the compatible handsets. We also talk about Larry Ellison's super fast boat, updated numbers on both U.S. broadband penetration, as well as cell phone subscriptions worldwide.
