LAS VEGAS -- We've seen plenty of appliances get bogged down by "smart features" that don't really deliver in practice. They have a high novelty factor, but don't actually make it easier for you to cook dinner or do laundry, etc. That's why we're intrigued by Whirlpool's CES unveil -- it features a whole host of innovative appliance concepts, but they are all supposedly designed with a nod toward simplicity.

The microwave is a common fixture in today's kitchen. And while many models haven't advanced very far beyond the requisite popcorn setting, finding a replacement can still be a daunting task. Before making a purchase, consider the following: would you prefer a countertop or a built-in microwave? What size microwave do you want and can your kitchen accommodate it? And, of course, how much are you willing to spend on a new microwave? Prices can range from the most basic $40 model to extremely customized oven-microwave combos for $5,000. For more buying tips and information on microwaves … Read more
If you think that microwaves seem like an antiquated appliance category, you're only half wrong. It's true that microwaves, as a group, have not seen many of the smarter updates of other appliances. I'd love to see a touch-screen microwave, for example. No such luck. For now, we must be satisfied with modest updates in the way of sensors and enhanced cooking methods.
While lacking in most of those newer microwave features like convection or inverter cooking, the 1,200-watt Whirlpool WMC50522AS still rates as a high-quality appliance, performing well in all of our tests. Occasionally, it … Read more
The Whirlpool WDL785SAAM is the first and only dishwasher currently included in Whirlpool’s line of 6th Sense Live smart appliances. At $949, it sits in the upper mid portion of the dishwasher price spectrum. Unlike many other smart appliances we've seen so far, Whirlpool isn't wrapping the connected features in a luxury package. Instead, the company seems confident to let the practical connectivity features stand on their own.
At its core, the WDL785SAAM is a tall tub, built-in dishwasher with a stainless steel tub and two removable racks. Because it is a tall tub washer, it can … Read more
The Whirlpool WRL767SIAM Side-by-Side Refrigerator is the debut refrigerator in Whirlpool’s 6th Sense Live appliance line. At $1,999, the WRL767SIAM has a reasonable price tag, at least compared with smart fridges we've seen from LG and Samsung. If its performance and the utility of its smartphone and tablet app live up to Whirlpool’s promises, it may be hard to recommend those more expensive models.
The WRL767SIAM is a side-by-side refrigerator. Per the product page, it has a 16.6 cubic foot space for the fridge, and 9.9 cubic feet on the left half for the … Read more

Today's shopper will find an ever-increasing range of color and style options, cleverly-designed units designed to disappear into your decor, and a wide variety of new smart features, including ones aimed at transforming your kitchen itself into an entertainment hub. It's enough to make you wonder … Read more

January is a time of renewal. It also happens to be when appliance makers show off their visions of what is to come. The event is CES 2013 and this year, according to those that make kitchen gadgets and appliances, everything is going to be very, very smart. While we have been promised automated kitchens in one form or another since the time of the Jetsons, there is one important factor in the modern world that may see the smart kitchen finally grow up: mobility.
