Review: Browse your social network with Facebook Web

Facebook's default app has never won a lot of fans because of its slightly buggy performance. Facebook Web gives you another way to view your feeds, but it doesn't do much to best Facebook's default app. The only improvements it gives you aren't noticeable and aren't worth the ads.

Since this is a Facebook viewer, you'll have to log in with your Facebook account to use it. It presents a Facebook layout that closely mirrors the one you're used to with a few changes. The most noticeable change is the ads on the … Read more

Search is on for lost first draft of first Web page

The first draft of the World Wide Web has gone missing, with perhaps one of the only copies of the very first Web site floating around the world's drawers or attics on a floppy disk somewhere.

Tim Berners-Lee wrote the first version of the very first Web page back in 1990 as a way for scientists to share information at CERN -- the European nuclear physics lab and particle accelerator site on the border of Switzerland and France. But it wasn't until 1992 that he actually saved a copy of that early CERN page.… Read more

Google+ rolls out a redesign for mobile Web similar to desktop

After unveiling an extensive revamp for the Google+ news stream on desktop, Google is now updating what users see when accessing the social network with their cell phones.

The Web giant announced Tuesday that it's working on "improving the look and feel of Google+ on the mobile Web."

The redesign includes making posts now appear as "cards" in the stream, which is supposed to make them easier to read and share. The social network also changed the way Profiles and Pages look to include cover photos and larger tap targets.

This mobile Web redesign mimics … Read more

Chrome gets a touch faster

Already known for its speed, Google just boosted Chrome's Web site rendering speed by another 5 percent.

The latest stable release of the browser, Chrome 27 (download for Windows, Mac, or Linux), received the small improvement by managing its resources better. To boil down the jargon, the browser's internal resource scheduler now favors more critical resources over preloaded sites.

Chrome engineer James Simonsen wrote in the company's blog announcing the update Tuesday that, across the hundreds of millions of people using Chrome, the amount of time saved equals around 510 years-per-week. But what we're really talking … Read more

Review: Skyfire Web Browser enhances your Web-surfing experience

Skyfire Web Browser 5.0 is superior in look and feel to some Android browsers but does not provide any significant features not found in the built-in browser.

Following a quick installation the first impression of Skyfire Web Browser 5.0 is very good. Users will notice the modern layout and the social media menu at the bottom of the screen. The problems arise, however, once the user truly compares it to the default browser or uses it for a long period of time. It does have all the basic features such as a bookmark list, offline browsing, and multitouch … Read more

Google cuts network usage by terabytes by switching to WebP

SAN FRANCISCO -- A month and a half ago, Google began using its WebP image format in its Google+ app for Android, and now it's saving tremendous amounts of network usage as a result.

"We're saving many terabytes of bandwidth a day, and because of the cost factor, we're saving our users money," said Stephen Konig, a Google product manager, in a well-attended WebP Google I/O talk Friday.

Users' cost savings come because they're less likely to run into data usage caps or incur onerous roaming fees outside their home countries.

But of … Read more

Use Postable to send personalized thank-you cards

Last year I wrote about how using Postable makes managing your address book less of a hassle. The service lets you request contact information from friends and family so you can easily send letters, cards, and gifts, knowing they're headed to the correct destination.

A recent update to Postable adds the ability to send thank-you cards to those who deserve a little gratitude, for $2 plus postage. With your address book stored in Postable, sending cards is supereasy. Here's how to get started:

Log in to your Postable account and you'll be asked if you want to … Read more

WebRTC fully operational in Firefox beta

The quest to free the browser from plug-ins that can impede performance took another step forward on Thursday when Mozilla activated by default Web Real-Time Communication in its latest Firefox beta.

WebRTC, as it's known, is the HTML5 standard for streaming files, video, and audio on the Web. Mozilla activated getUserMedia in Firefox in April, which WebRTC uses to access the Webcam and microphone. Now, PeerConnection and DataChannels have been turned on in the Firefox 22 Beta, available for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

PeerConnection lets the browser set up real-time video and audio calls, while DataChannels enables peer-to-peer data … Read more

Review: Quickly browse sites with Fast Web Browser Free

For a long time, Apple did not allow third-party companies to publish Web browsers on the App Store. While Safari--the built-in browser for iOS devices--is a good browser, it lacks a lot of tools people want, like Flash support. One of the best tools to get it right is Fast Web Browser Free.

Fast Web Browser is exactly what it says, a quick and streamlined Web browser that provides a huge range of features you don't expect to see in any third-party app, let alone a Web browser. From automatic full-screen browsing to intuitive input of URLs, Web previews, … Read more

After teen is shot, mom allegedly goes first to WebMD

Our lives tend to be defined by the decisions we make. And the ones we don't.

Please place yourself, therefore, into the hands and mind of someone whose 14-year-old son has just been shot. He has been shot by a friend playing with a gun.

What might be your first decision?

I fancy that, for many, the choice might be to take the boy to the nearest hospital. However, this was not the decision allegedly taken by Deborah Tagle of Santa Fe, Texas.

As KHOU-TV reports, she allegedly felt the most appropriate course of action was to go to … Read more
