LAS VEGAS -- What does Verizon Wireless have up its sleeve?

Verizon is one of the few companies opting for a splashy press conference at the CTIA Wireless, which officially kicked off today. As such, it's essentially headlining what is expected to be a quiet show this year.

Customers not as happy with iPhone as they were last year

More customers are satisfied with Apple's phones than any other handsets, but they're not as happy as they were last year, a new report said.

According to an American Customer Satisfaction Index report issued today, Apple received a score of 81 (on a scale of 100) in terms of customer satisfaction. But the company dropped 2 percent from its 2012 position, and the iPhone lags the customer satisfaction rating of 86 for Apple's desktop, laptop, and tablet business.

At the same time, satisfaction with Motorola phones jumped 5 percent from 2012 to 77, and Nokia grew 1 … Read more

CTIA 2013 preview: Spring show quietly fades away

LAS VEGAS -- When Ashton Kutcher and Jennifer Lopez are the biggest draws for a technology show, there's a problem.

The CTIA Wireless trade group's spring show officially kicks off for the last time on Tuesday. It marks an unceremonious end to the conference, which next year will merge with its sister show in the fall to better align itself with the holiday shopping season.

While CTIA still touts itself as the largest wireless show in North America, its influence and importance have waned in the last few years. CTIA has always had the misfortune of following at … Read more

Verizon Galaxy S4 may be shipping early

Verizon looks to be pushing harder to get Samsung's new Galaxy S4 into the hands of customers.

Some Verizon customers have begun to report receiving notifications from the carrier that their new Android superphones have shipped earlier than expected.

While I've yet to see video footage, I can only assume that many happy dances have followed receipt of these emails. … Read more

Nokia Lumia 928 launches for sale via Verizon

Verizon subscribers eying Nokia's new Lumia 928 can now pick up the phone either online or offline.

As previously promised, the 928 went on sale Thursday, available through Verizon's Web site and its brick-and-mortar retail stores.

Selling the phone for $99 with the standard two-year agreement, Verizon is currently offering a ship date of May 20, so eager buyers won't have long to wait.

The Lumia 928 is a smaller, lighter, and sleeker version of its 920 predecessor and offers an AMOLED display and a brighter flash. Like all Lumias, it runs Microsoft's Windows Phone software.… Read more

Pass up a ride with the LG Revere 2

Available from Verizon for $79.99, the LG Revere 2 sports a sophisticated brushed-metal look and a familiar clamshell construction. It's aimed at customers looking for something simple and low-maintenance.

However, even with these somewhat attractive features, the device has enough shortcomings to make me doubt its viability. For instance, the browser is so tedious to use (and trust me, I've used my fair share of rudimentary mobile browsers), I wondered if it was even worth the effort to put it on there in the first place.

Indeed, if you need to make calls and send texts, this … Read more

Top mobile carriers join forces to stop texting while driving

The four major wireless carriers are putting their sway behind a massive ad campaign that aims to lower the amount of people that text while driving in the U.S.

Initiated by AT&T, the multi-million dollar "It Can Wait" campaign now has the support of Verizon, Sprint, T-Mobile, and more than 200 other organizations. Besides rolling out TV, radio, and Internet ads throughout the summer, the campaign will also travel to thousands of retail stores, create a social media presence, and display messaging on Goodyear blimps.

"Texting while driving is a deadly habit that makes … Read more

Nokia Lumia 925: Great phone, wrong carrier

ORLANDO, Fla.--The Nokia Lumia 925 is a sexy-looking smartphone. Too bad a vast majority of U.S. consumers aren't going to even consider it.

Nokia unveiled its latest flagship smartphone at an event in London on Tuesday. But U.S. customers will care most about where it will sell here, and the news isn't great.

T-Mobile, the smallest nationwide carrier -- by far -- will get exclusive rights to sell the Lumia 925.

In an era when the top-tier handset vendors are moving away from exclusive deals, Nokia appears to be betting even more heavily on them. … Read more

Verizon pricing for shared plan won't change, CFO says

Verizon Wireless may be looking at new phone pricing options, but that won't affect service plan pricing, Verizon's financial chief said Tuesday.

Fran Shammo, speaking at the J.P. Morgan tech conference, said the company has looked at T-Mobile's new phone and service plan options "a number of times," but Verizon won't change the service pricing on its "Share Everything" plans.

"We may give users more options to buy phones, but it won't affect the service pricing," he said.

T-Mobile earlier this year killed its contract plans and subsidies … Read more

FCC again balks on telephone network shutdown

Six months after wireline telephone operators and trade groups asked the Federal Communications Commission for permission to begin shutting down their aging switched networks, the agency responded late Friday, calling for further study.

In a public notice (PDF) issued by an agency task force created in December 2012, the FCC reiterated the importance of accelerating the transition from switched networks to native IP infrastructure. But rather than approving limited trials to test technical and regulatory obstacles to a full conversion, the agency instead raised more questions about the trials and called for more rounds of comments.

The task force also … Read more
