As expected, Turntable.fm licenses songs from major labels

Turntable.fm, the music-sharing service that took music fans by storm last summer, has signed licensing agreements with all four of the top recording companies.

Last week, CNET reported that the company was very near to becoming a licensed operation. Turntable.fm is a little bit Napster and a little bit online radio. Users can become DJs and share music within virtual "rooms."

Billy Chasen, the company's founder, made the announcement at the South by Southwest conference. According to a report in Billboard, Chasen gave some credit to the labels for making the deals.

Music service Turntable.fm signing major labels

Turntable.fm, the service that allows users share music within virtual "rooms," is closing in on becoming a fully licensed service, CNET has learned.

A cross between Napster and radio, Turntable has already signed EMI to a recorded-music deal and is close to penning agreements with Universal Music Group and Sony, according to multiple sources with knowledge of the talks.

The music service is also still in talks with Warner Music Group. A spokesman for EMI declined to comment. Representatives from Turntable.fm and the other labels did not respond to interview requests.

A couple of smaller players in the digital music sector are maneuvering to keep pace in an increasingly crowded field.

Turntable.fm, a startup music service with an emphasis on sharing songs with friends, is in talks with the four major record companies about obtaining "unprecedented" streaming-license agreements, according to a report today from Bloomberg. Over at MOG, a scrappy music service that has struggled for years to build interest, announced that it would offer a limited number of songs for free--provided users are willing to work for the privilege.

Music publishers file copyright suit against Grooveshark

Grooveshark just can't seem to shake its copyright woes.

A group of songwriters and music publishers filed a lawsuit on July 15 in Tennessee against the digital-music service, claiming Grooveshark enables users to obtain music illegally and therefore is liable for copyright infringement, contributory infringement, and vicarious infringement.

Grooveshark, based in Gainesville, Fla., is a service that offers free music by enabling users to post their own tracks to the site and then share them with other users.
