The CST-01: The world's thinnest watch makes its debut

LAS VEGAS--The fight to build the thinnest watch has finally been won, folks. At least for now. Central Standard Timing has partnered with E Ink to create the CST-01; purportedly the world's thinnest watch.

At 0.80mm the watch is thinner than a credit card. I briefly got a chance to hold the extremely light watch and it is indeed the thinnest I've ever seen.

According to Central Standard Timing, the patent-pending CST-01 is assembled by laminating thin, flexible components into a 0.5mm pocket etched into a single piece of flexible stainless steel. This is different from … Read more

Thinnest (and lightest) tablets

Even if your tablet appreciation never deviates from pragmatic, functionality concerns, you'll at least have to admit that a thin tablet has its advantages. Thin tablets are usually sleeker, sexier, and easier to handle. Also, their relative girth does not necessarily preclude them from including plenty of useful connections.

By their nature of being so thin, all tablets on this list are the lightest on the market within their screen-size category. The tablets on this list were chosen with respect to both their weight and girth.… Read more

Toshiba Excite to launch one day ahead of new iPad announcement

Earlier this year at CES, Toshiba told me to expect a first-quarter release for what is now known as the Excite 10 LE tablet, and it looks like it's sticking to that.

On March 6, would-be buyers can purchase the 10.1-inch tablet from select U.S. retailers at prices of $530 for 16GB and $600 for the 32GB version.

Given yesterday's announcement of an Apple iPad event scheduled for March 7, it's difficult to look at the Excite 10 LE's scheduled March 6 release without a curious eye.

I asked Toshiba if yesterday's iPad … Read more

LG's thinnest monitor ever, the E2290 (review)

For the last few years, there's been this unofficial mandate in the computer monitor space to have thinner and thinner displays. Vendors have succeeded for the most part, offering monitors that are thinner than anything that was available just a couple years prior.

However, this ever-constant demand to see monitors cut the fat has unfortunately culminated in what we have today: monitors, strung out on Stacker 2 and Cordislim, willing to do anything for a another hit of--OK, as I type this, the man who looks over my shoulder, constantly correcting my mistakes, is telling me that this is … Read more

Asus puts 22-inch monitor on a crash diet

Sharp may brag about its 108-inch display, but Asus is seeking a different claim to fame: The company says it is releasing "the world's slimmest 22-inch widescreen LCD monitor."

Regardless of whether the claim is true--we've made our opinion known about "world's first" statements in general--there's no denying that this monitor is anorexically thin. Despite an apparent typo in the press release, as Engadget points out, this TV measures less than an inch deep--0.97 inches, to be exact. That would be more than a third slimmer than Hitachi's 1.5-inch modelRead more

Bluetrek headset claims to be world's thinnest

ModeLabs is perhaps best known for designing phones branded by a diverse array of international retailers, including Christian Dior, Hummer, Tag Heuer, and Levi's. But like many phone manufacturers, it has fallen under the spell of trying to tout the smallest of something or another.

In this case, it has partnered with Bluetrek to offer the "Metal" headset, a Bluetooth gadget that is claimed to be the world's thinnest at just 0.16 inches thick, according to Gizmodo. Despite its tiny stature, the companies say the Europe-bound headset will still get five hours of talk time … Read more

BenQ shows off its slimmest 24-inch panel yet

The Taiwanese PC maker calls it the "world's slimmest 24-inch LCD monitor," boasting that it measures just 2.44 inches at its thickest point.

The V2400W design, which was inspired by a B-2 Stealth bomber, uses an advanced Rapid Heat Cycle Molding (RHCM) injection technology to achieve its slim profile, according to BenQ. This new technology allows for more flexibility in molding non-traditional shapes and designs.

Introduced as a premium product, the V2400W sports a mirror-black finish with slick touch controls. It will feature HDMI (with HDCP), DVI, and VGA connectivity options, together with full 1080p high-definition … Read more

The thinnest flip-phone (of the hour)

Claiming that you've got the world's thinnest phone is a boast that might last a day or two tops, even if it's true. But NEC may well have those bragging rights for a few hours, at least in the flip-phone category.

Its n703iu is just 0.45 inches thick when closed, Electronista says. Making it even more interesting is the outer shell, which features 49 LED lights that change patterns to indicate when calls, e-mail or other functions are at work. It also has the obligatory 1.3-megapixel camera and MP3 player.

The 3G handset will be … Read more
