Cisco: Internet traffic to quadruple by 2015

The amount of Internet traffic crisscrossing the world will quadruple by 2015 as the number of networked devices surpasses 15 billion, according to a report out today from Cisco.

Releasing its fifth annual Visual Networking Index Forecast today, the networking giant forecast that global Internet traffic will reach 966 exabytes a year in just four years. One exabyte equals 1 million terabytes, 1 billion gigabytes, or about 250 million DVDs.

Per month, global IP traffic will hit 80.5 exabytes by 2015, up from about 20.2 exabytes per month in 2010. And per second, traffic will hit 245 terabytes, … Read more

Get a 1TB Iomega USB hard drive for $60 shipped

I know cheap 1-terabyte hard drives are getting to be old hat these days, but you have to understand: I can remember when the PC reseller I once worked for was able to offer a 250-megabyte drive for $250, and what a big deal that was.

Consequently, when I see an Iomega Prestige 1TB USB hard drive for $59.99 shipped (after applying coupon code VN16W1W1JC2$MR at checkout), I can't not post it.

You'll be glad to know that this deal requires not two, not one, but zero mail-in rebates. What's more, unlike the Fantom driveRead more

Get a 1.5-terabyte SATA hard drive for $69.99

Seriously, how much cheaper can giant hard drives get? Here's one for the record books: SuperBiiz (no points for spelling, guys) has a 1.5TB Samsung EcoGreen F2 SATA2 internal hard drive for $69.99 shipped.

That's after applying coupon code JULY4TH, which cuts the already impressive $79.99 sale price by another 10 bucks.

Who in the world needs 1.5 terabytes of storage? Anyone who does anything with video, that's who. For example, if you shoot a lot of 720p or 1080p footage with your camcorder, those clips gobble gigabytes like nobody's business.

Get a 1TB external hard drive for $50

How low can a terabyte of external storage go? I've seen the drives hit $90, then $80, and even occasionally the $70 mark. But $50? That's new. And awesome.

MacMall has the Fantom GreenDrive GD1000EU 1TB external hard drive for $49.99 (plus $9 or so for shipping). What's the catch? I call it rebate No. 1 and rebate No. 2.

Yep, the drive will cost you $99.99 up front, then end up at $49.99 after a pair of $25 rebate checks roll in (one each from Fantom and MacMall). I know that's a … Read more

Get a 1TB Iomega network drive for $114.99

Sigh. I should have known this morning's Best Buy Netbook would sell out. Grumble, grumble. Well, here's something just as good, IMHO.

Dell has the Iomega 1TB Home Media Network Hard Drive for $114.99 shipped. That's one of the best NAS deals I've ever seen.

An NAS (network-attached storage) system is great for backing up and sharing media between multiple household computers. It also makes any selected data available over the Internet--nice for sharing, say, photo slideshows with distant relatives.

Be sure to read CNET's review of the Iomega drive and watch the above … Read more

Get a 1.5-terabyte external drive for $99.99

Storage junkie that I am, I loved seeing terabyte hard drives dip below $100 this year, and then drop as low as $75.

Today we've reached another milestone: Dell has a Western Digital Elements 1.5-terabyte USB hard drive for $99.99 shipped. Yowza.

That's an awful lot of storage for less than $100. In fact, it's probably more than most people need, though I'd rather have too much space than too little.

The Elements sports a USB 2.0 interface. Curiously, Western Digital doesn't list the speed of the drive itself, which leads me … Read more

Seagate bumps up external HDD capacity to 1TB

We gave an Editors' Choice award to the first round of Seagate's FreeAgent Go external hard drives, but as with all things related to storage (and storage only), bigger is better, so we're very anxious to get our hands on these new FreeAgents with up to 1TB of space.

Just announced Wednesday, the new line will look almost exactly the same as the original, but as expected, the 1TB version is a little chunkier than the rest. In addition to the original catalog, Seagate now offers 750GB ($200), 880GB ($210), and the 1TB ($250) version as well. Of … Read more
