AT&T is preparing to pull the plug on its 2G wireless network, but it will be a long goodbye.

The Dallas telecommunications company said it plans to discontinue its 2G network, also known as EDGE or GSM, by Jan. 1, 2017. It plans to take that 2G spectrum and re-use it to augment its 3G and 4G wireless services. The plans were disclosed in its filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission.

New Orleans, St. Louis, and Cleveland are just a few of the cities on AT&T's upcoming LTE deployment list.

The company revealed today that it will bring 4G access to a dozen markets in April and May and on into the early summer.

Even though the LG Thrill 4G was announced in March, we're just now getting confirmation about its price. AT&T has told us that the LG Thrill 4G will be selling for $99.99 after a two-year service agreement. As for availability, well, we still don't know the exact date, but we expect that to be announced shortly.

Adobe Systems released Lightroom 3.4 last night, formalizing support for the cameras listed in the beta version but also slipping in the ability to decode raw photos from Nikon's new D5100.

Lightroom, along with the related Camera Raw plug-in for Photoshop CS5, is geared for handling the unprocessed raw images from higher-end cameras. This is an option that offers better quality but more hassle than JPEG. For Adobe and others such as Apple in the same position, it means adding support for a constant parade of new cameras, each with its own proprietary format.

Adobe Systems published a release candidate for Lightroom 3.4 that can process raw images from Canon's latest entry-level SLRs and several other cameras.

The software, along with the accompanying Camera Raw 6.4 plug-in for Photoshop CS5, brings support for Canon's Rebel T3i (aka 600D) and Rebel T3 (aka 1100D), two models likely to be very popular among photography enthusiasts.

Wilson's taking a day off after powering through CNET's video coverage of CES 2011, so Caroline McCarthy fills in to give us the spectator's perspective of the show and the keynote speeches. Unsurprisingly, the Samsung keynote looked just as over the top online as it did in person.

We saw a lot of cool things at CES this year, least of which was this arcade cabinet for the iPad, but this year was definitely about tablet PCs. They stole the show and came in multiple sizes, but CNET's annual Best in Show Award goes to the Motorola Xoom, although we're hoping this isn't how they show their appreciation.

Poised to go head-to-head with the Apple iPad, the Xoom is a touch screen-tablet that trumps the iPad in a few ways. It has front- and rear-facing cameras (the front is HD); it has a larger screen with a higher resolution than the iPad; and it operates on the Verizon network instead of AT&T.

It's also the first device to run the latest version of Google Android OS 3.0, code-named Honeycomb, so when it comes out sometime in the first quarter of this year, expect it to support multitasking and Verizon's ultrafast 4G network.

Verizon is also rumored to be offering the iPhone 4 pending tomorrow's announcement, and Caroline and I are both excited and nervous about its release. The Wall Street Journal reported that the company will keep its $30-a-month unlimited data plan, but our own Bonnie Cha tells us it might not get LTE 4G support until later this year--as usual, it's all up to Apple.
