What's the best under $100 in-ear headphone?

I wrote a very favorable review of the Velodyne vPulse in-ear headphones a few months ago, but for one reason or another I'm still listening to the vPulse. Not exclusively, I listen to my own headphones and headphones I'm reviewing, of course, but there's something about the vPulse that still draws me in.

Part of the appeal is comfort; it's exceptional in that regard, and most of my vPulse listening time is on the New York subway. At home the vPulse has too much bass, but the quality of the bass is so good I don'… Read more

Take a course on your iOS device

iTunes U lets people download college courses with all the included materials, and study a subject on their iOS device.

As a recently released product there are currently not many courses to take at iTunes U (about 30 at the time of release), but it's pretty easy to predict the app will probably gain more traction as we approach the fall when classes resume for a new year. Of the courses offered, many big-name schools have contributed their coursework including Yale, MIT, Harvard, and several others.

The interface for the iTunes U app shares the look and layout of … Read more

Google Image Search now lets you sort by subject

Those people who use Google's Image Search to find photos and graphics should now have an easier time zeroing in on just the right ones.

Unveiled yesterday, a new feature in Google Image Search now lets you sort your images by subject. So instead of seeing just a random, haphazard gallery of images, you can organize them so that each row displays images specific to a certain topic or area.

As Google's official blog points out, the new feature can come in handy especially when you're struggling to find the right words or phrase to describe the … Read more

Safety net for Acrobat

Adobe's Portable Document Format helped transform the business world and bring it onto the Internet and into the paperless age. Today many people use PDF files for everything ranging from important personal papers to service manuals for lawn mowers. If you use PDFs a lot, you'll like PDF Summary Maker from Traction Software. It's a PDF file management tool that lets you change the summary information in one or many PDF files all at once. You can change the creator, creation date, producer, author, title, and keyword fields within your documents. It includes full database import and … Read more

Flash card hassle

WinFlash Educator is a needlessly complicated study aid program. It won't save you time over creating flash cards with plain index cards and a set of markers, and the added functionality it offers over the paper versions isn't enough to justify spending the time using this overly complex program.

WinFlash Educator has a Help file, demos, and a tutorial, which is a good thing, because it is nearly impossible to figure out how to use the program without them. The unappealing interface isn't intuitive, and once you get to the right screen to begin creating your questions, … Read more

Spotty performance

Subject Search Scanner offers users advanced search features to quickly locate important files. Unfortunately, an eyesore of a user interface and sketchy performance left few good impressions.

During the installation process, the program takes over your entire screen with an annoying PowerPoint presentation, complete with music and bullet points. The user interface features a white-on-black color scheme that is very hard on the eyes. The tabs let you navigate the program date, time, and advanced settings. Performing a search requires that you enter your keyword, select the files you want to include in the search, and choose the file extensions. … Read more

The 404 246: Where we send Justin back to the right coast

Technically it's the "left" coast but yes, Justin Yu will be traveling three hours back in time next week as he makes his way back to California to spend the holidays with family. So my present to Justin is doing this blog post for him.

The 404 will continue on as we've got plenty of great guests planned for the last week of shows for 2008. Make sure you listen next week as we've got Wicker Hollow, Rana Sobhany, and Libe Goad all booked! Also, send us your best Morgan Freeman impressions for a chance to win the new Prince of Persia video game.

On today's show, we reminisce about last night's debauchery known as the "Black-Ops Holiday Party." Justin was a disaster after just three sips of rum and we've got the photographic evidence to prove it. We'll disclose those photos at a later date--maybe when he's gone next week.

Check out today's episode to learn more about the nude photographic habits of America's teenage population along with some great voice mails and e-mails from the public. Have a great weekend!
