Slow down, dad! Hot-rod baby carriage can reach 50 mph

British inventor Colin Furze's 1-month-old son may have to wait til he's old enough to drive before he really gets to ride in his own baby carriage. Furze set his mind to creating the world's fastest pram, and it looks like he is likely to succeed.

According to the Daily Mail, the three-wheeled baby carriage is outfitted with a 125cc motorbike engine. It took four weeks and more than $700 to put the speed demon machine together. … Read more

Self-folding Origami stroller finally rolls out

We first covered the 4Moms Origami stroller way back in 2008. The $850 high-tech pram is finally set to arrive in January, with preorders currently under way.

The Origami isn't for parents who are into old-fashioned baby bonnets and bassinets. It's for parents who have purchased slobber-proof iPhone cases and Star Trek bibs for their little geeky angel. (The promo video features raunchy rock and roll music, in case you were still wondering about the target audience.)… Read more

How to baby-proof a disaster zone

When Samsonite released design guidelines for its second annual Baby Travel Design Competition earlier this year, it suggested the following categories: transport, sleeping, safety, feeding, playing, bathing, and changing.

Last year's winners ranged from carriers and strollers to a sleeping bag and floating humidifier. Samsonite recently announced its eight winners out of the almost 1,700 entries submitted from 78 countries in 2009, including a bassinette, all-in-one bag, and baby air seat. Notably absent was one entrant: a disaster-ready pod out of Iran that manages to be both brilliant and bizarre.

First, the specs. As noted via the designer'… Read more

Father's Day special: Baby care and meaningful marketing

The $10 billion market for baby and young children’s furnishings (cribs, other case goods, layette, nursery decor, and the like) and accessories (car seats, strollers, baby monitors, diaper bags, etc.) is a lucrative market, and the baby stroller is one of its most competitive sectors. Hundreds of models vie for the attention of parents-to-be, and the level of detailed research, due diligence, and individual preferences may come close to the decision making process by an airline for the purchase of a Boeing 787. There are only few things – at least that’s what the industry makes you believe – that … Read more

Origami stroller uses wheel power

I don't have kids, and I don't plan to anytime soon, but if I did, this would be the stroller I'd want to flash around among the desperate housewives and househusbands in my neighborhood.

The Origami Power Folding Stroller from 4Moms folds and unfolds itself at the push of a button. It has reflective fabric and a tiny trim of lights in key areas for when it's dark.

As you push the stroller, the wheel power regenerates the battery that powers the gadgets, making the stroller environmentally friendly. It also has two cup holders by the … Read more

Combining the Segway with skiing and strollers

We've intimated before that the Segway isn't exactly our cup of tea, but we're frankly afraid of going down that route again for fear of reprisal. So without judgment, we herewith present another item on said machine that seeks to improve upon the design, regardless of how one feels about it.

Designer Sarah Park has drafted a concept that would outfit the famed personal transporter with dual handlebars that Gearfuse describes as a "skiing-like steering mechanism." The size of the handlebars would be similar to those of a baby stroller and navigated in a similar … Read more

With an AT-AT Imperial Walker stroller, your kid will never turn out normal

An e-mail exchange with another Craver yesterday, for one reason or another, led to my embarrassing revelation that photos exist of me at a very young age wearing a pair of big, fake fennec fox ears. It's embarrassing, yes, but after reading this post on Geekologie I realized that things could be much, much worse. The poor little munchkin in this photo will have to deal for the rest of his or her life with the fact that there exists visual evidence that he or she used to get pushed around in a Star Wars stroller. To be more … Read more
