The cool new UI you can't have...yet

SAN FRANCISCO--Generally, OEM software isn't of particular interest to consumer product reviewers, but I couldn't help but be drawn in by the sweet-looking user interface (UI) development being shown off by SPB Software at the CTIA Fall 2010 show. This multiplatform solution, called Mobile Shell, is currently up to version 5.0, which is compatible with Windows Mobile, Android, and Symbian operating systems.

The software is aimed at providing carriers with a way to offer a standardized UI across mobile devices, but the truly compelling part is the front-end user experience, which is pretty fantastic from what I'… Read more

Give Windows Mobile looks and brains--video

Few could claim that Windows Mobile phones are known for their captivating interfaces. In fact, some designs seem cramped and downright austere. A snappy and slick-looking user-interface replacement like the recently updated Spb Mobile Shell 3.0 can not only make your phone look like a million bucks, but it can also do it two ways while making the phone's other features easier to access and control. The built-in app launcher helps you get to settings, frequently used apps, and the task manager, while a very visual contact launcher lets friends' photos take center stage. That includes letting you … Read more

Windows Mobile eye-candy: Spb Mobile Shell 3.0

I'm no cheerleader for most Windows Mobile interfaces, and that goes double for phones like the Samsung Omnia, with its widgety sidebar of management tools that rubs me the wrong way. A decently designed theme is typically an improvement.

Swooping to the rescue, the recently released (and awkwardly named) Spb Mobile Shell 3.0 lays out a heap of good-looking screens, shortcuts, and widgets onto the mobile dashboard without ever deleting the default Today screen. There's a professional layout, casual themes, room for customization, and an extended mobile desktop that triples the real estate when you swipe left … Read more

With integration for Facebook photos, intuitive navigation, and widget customizations, Spb's mobile interface alternative go a long way toward making Windows Mobile engaging.

The professional view sports a clock and weather widget, your various voice mail and message in-boxes, alarms, and the calendar on a glossy background whose maroon default you can change. Below is a contact icon that opens your contact list. Newly added Facebook integration lets you pick among your … Read more

Spb TV: TV on smartphones gets real, subscription-free

Back when I still had the ATT Tilt, I thought it was uncool that I had to pay about $10 a month to watch TV on the phone via a high-speed Internet connection. This is one of the reasons I moved on to an iPhone 3G.

However, if you haven't given up on Windows Mobile smarthphones yet, hang on, because I have some good news.

Spb Software, a Windows Mobile platform developer that makes online games and services for smartphones, announced Tuesday its new standalone application called Spb TV.

The application is essentially a mobile TV player with onscreen … Read more

Spb to power mobile online services

Starting with mobile online games, Spb Software, a popular vendor for Windows mobile apps, is rolling out a set of premium online services for 3G networks. And Russian mobile users will be getting the first crack.

The package, called SkyTouch, is basically a customized Spb Mobile user interface that gives consumers access to local online services over cellular data connections, such as streaming music or TV. This is the first time that Spb Online is implemented by a mobile service provider, which in this case is SkyLink, Russia's largest CDMA mobile operator.

SkyTouch will be available preinstalled on SkyLink'… Read more

Check that mate with Spb online mobile game suite

I've been having a lot of fun playing checkers with my distant friend via MSN Messenger lately, and thought it would be cool if we could do that during the commute.

Well, wouldn't you know it? Spb Software, a maker of Windows Mobile applications, announced on Wednesday the release of its Spb Online Games, a separate suite consisting of four online games.

These games include two versions of checkers (yes!), plus Hexagon, and Reversi. They allow you to play against real people from anywhere in the world, in real time.

The games, of course, require a Windows Mobile … Read more
