With all the news focused around Facebook, Microsoft just quietly launched its own social network for students called So.cl (pronounced "social"). It's different from Facebook and Google Plus in that it is focused around search. What students search for on So.cl is shared with other So.cl users -- and it can be shared on other networks like Facebook. The idea is to give students a quick and easy way to share information found through searches.

Microsoft quietly launches So.cl social network

In the wake of the IPO of social-networking giant Facebook, Microsoft has quietly launched So.cl, its own social networking foray.

However, So.cl isn't designed to be a Facebook challenger. The project, the details of which leaked out last year, is designed to give students the ability to network with their peers to share information.

Microsoft's So.cl project isn't aiming to rival Facebook

Microsoft finally disclosed what its rumored So.cl project is, and it's not a Facebook killer after all.

The site, details of which leaked last month, is designed to give students the ability to network with their peers to share information, "transforming the web and social networks into the new classroom," according to a post on the Microsoft Research Web site.

The project, which comes from Microsoft Research, is specifically designed for university students, and not intended to compete broadly with consumer social networks such as Facebook.
