Airbnb works with NYC offering free housing to Sandy victims

In the wake of Hurricane Sandy, more than 100,000 East Coasters have been left homeless and scrambling to find shelter. And, it gets worse -- today another storm is hitting the region bringing more freezing rain and wind.

So, New Yorkers will most likely welcome the news that New York Mayor Michael Bloomberg announced today that the city's government will partner with Airbnb to offer Sandy victims free temporary housing.

"Airbnb is now enabling people to offer space to those in need -- absolutely free. People who wish to share their space at no cost to guests … Read more

Virtual Pet Shelter founder finds solace in Tamagotchi

Kacper Jarecki, a librarian at Queens Library in New York, has 10 other life forms living with him. They just all happen to be electronic toys.

Jarecki's Virtual Pet Shelter is one of the more unusual projects on Kickstarter. It has a modest $250 goal and no backers yet, but there's a certain charm to the concept.

Digital-pet revival In case you missed the fad, virtual pets are little electronic toy creatures that require "feeding" and care--and sometimes, as in the case of Webkinz, have alter-egos in the form of online avatars. Jarecki is looking to … Read more

Solar bus shelters for San Francisco

San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) have unveiled new energy-efficient bus shelters for the city.

The first of these bus shelters has been put up on the corner of Geary Boulevard and Arguello Boulevard with plans for four more to be rolled out in the coming weeks. The city plans to evaluate the five bus shelters throughout the summer to see what, if any, changes need to be made to the existing design.

Following the evaluation, SFMTA plans to replace a minimum of 1,100 existing bus shelters throughout San Francisco beginning this … Read more

PhotoShelter sponsors awards

PhotoShelter's business is all about housing your photos and helping you sell photography, but the people who run it also seem to care a lot about photographers. As part of that, they recently ran a photo contest and have sponsored two upcoming contests. PhotoShelter's own contest was called Elevation 2008 and was judged by Paul Moakley, senior photo editor of Newsweek; Phil Bicker, creative director for The Fader; Michelle Egiziano, director of photography for Spin Magazine; Michele Outland, art director for Nylon Magazine; Stephen Walker, director of photography at Nylon Magazine; and Clinton Cargill, photo editor for the … Read more

Flickr puts hold on PhotoShelter tool

Earlier today I wrote about a new tool that PhotoShelter announced to let its customers migrate images from Flickr accounts to their PhotoShelter Personal Archives. Since then, Flickr has disabled the tool. A company spokesperson for Flickr said, "Photoshelter did not follow the guidelines outlined by Flickr around API usage. We are currently working with them to correct the issue."

My contact at PhotoShelter said that the company is working on the problem and a message on the new tool's page notes that, "Flickr has temporarily disabled this feature. We are working to address it and … Read more

PhotoShelter adds Flickr import tool

Barely a week goes by when I don't see a story about someone's photo being stolen from Flickr. I guess I'm not the only one, because PhotoShelter today announced that they've added a tool to their customers' Personal Archive accounts that lets them import images from, or export images to, a Flickr Pro-level account. Ultimately, it's a pretty slick way for the company to capitalize on the fact that PhotoShelter's Personal Archive provides a more secure environment for photographers, since it doesn't allow unauthorized viewing or downloads, though photographers can set selected galleries … Read more

PhotoShelter nabs exec from Getty Images

While Getty Images continues to look around for someone to buy them, the rising Internet-based stock image house PhotoShelter today announced that it has hired two new executives, one of which it hired away from Getty. When it launched its stock image business called the PhotoShelter Collection late last year, the company promised to invest $1 million toward promoting the Collection's images among buyers of stock photography. As part of this effort, the company has hired former American Express Senior Product Manager Andrew Fingerman to be PhotoShelter's new vice president of marketing, and Getty Images' former market development … Read more

Radioactive watch really isn't

We may rail against watches that try to reinvent the way we tell time, but we'd never criticize one that provided important safety information. And what could be more important than radiation levels?

But the "Radio Active" stainless steel LED watch doesn't really measure radioactivity, though it does use some '50s-era atomic warning symbols to tell time. As much as we appreciate the effort, we're still not sure if this something we could use. "The design has nothing but signs and words," according to the description on AudioCubes. "However, it won't … Read more
